…hails Interim Management Committee
A two-time highest goals scorer in the history of Nigeria Football League, Tony Nwaigwe has tasked Heartland FC of Owerri to seal the promotion ticket to the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL.
The Owerri-based side will compete with other teams in the Nigeria National League Super 8 playoffs competition to determine the four teams that will compete in the NPFL next season.
Speaking with Wakawaka Sports Extra, Nwaigwe urged the Imo State government to fund the team noting that football has always been the unifying factor in the state.
He said: “Whatever they are doing now they should continue with it because Imo is a very big state for not to have a team in the NPFL. They should do everything to get back to the premier league because we deserve that.
“We also plead on the government to come to the aid of the team because if the team is not well financed, they won’t be able to achieve that and the people of Imo State will suffer because they won’t be able to watch the premier league.
“We need that unifying factor which is football to be able to galvanize everybody in the state to make sure things go well and everybody is united in one front.”
While commending the Interim Management Committee of the NPFL for ensuring a smooth running of the league, he expressed satisfaction with the likes of Rangers Int’l of Enugu and Bendel Insurance for reigniting the old rivalry in the Federation Cup final.
“We are beginning to realise that if the league is not properly contested we won’t have that edge because it has to have proper competition to make sure there is clarity in terms of officiating, organization so that everybody will be okay to make the teams competing are satisfied with the result.
“He has done well and kudos to him and he should be a push to make sure the league runs smoothly. It’s a good thing to see some of those old teams there are fighting and trying to keep their place, that shows you some of them are trying to keep that standard going.”
