CP Aboki Danjuma: The Police Chief With a Human Face

When Aboki Danjuma assumed office as Commissioner of Police in Imo State in November 2023, many residents braced themselves for the usual: promises, media soundbites, and a command that would soon settle into old routines. But less than a year into his tenure, the soft-spoken officer from Taraba became something different—an emblem of sincerity, humility, and people-centred policing in uniform.
Now, with his recent promotion to Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) and his expected departure from Imo State for higher national duty, many across the state say his legacy will be remembered not just for security operations, but for the human face he brought to policing.
A Career Shaped by Service
Born in Taraba and educated at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Danjuma joined the Nigeria Police Force over three decades ago.
His career has seen him serve as Divisional Police Officer, Area Commander, Deputy Commandant of the Police College, Ikeja, and Deputy Commissioner in key departments before his posting to Owerri.
Colleagues from those years describe him as a man with an unusual blend of firmness and empathy. “He listens first before acting,” said a retired officer who worked with him in Lagos.
Hands-On Leadership
From the outset, Danjuma refused to govern from behind a desk. He banned tactical squads from using unmarked vehicles, insisted on respect for human rights, and personally monitored checkpoints to discourage extortion.
His philosophy was simple and consistent: “I need to see things for myself. Policing is about serving the people, not intimidating them,” he told journalists during one of his unscheduled tours.
That philosophy came alive earlier this year along the Owerri–Onitsha Road, when a commercial driver cried out against extortion at a checkpoint. Rather than issue a directive from headquarters, Danjuma quietly drove to the location.
Officers were stunned when their Commissioner of Police stepped out of a vehicle. “If you must collect money, go to your bank and work as a cashier,” he told them before ordering their arrest. The incident spread rapidly among transport unions and became symbolic of his zero tolerance for abuse.
A Father to Mbaise Youths
For the youths of Mbaise, Danjuma’s sincerity carried a deeper meaning. Earlier this year, they cried out over repeated cases of harassment and intimidation by security operatives. Unlike the past, their voices were not ignored.
CP Danjuma invited their representatives to Owerri and listened for hours as they spoke.
“That day, he was not just a police boss, he was a father,” recalled Kennedy Onwunali, a youth leader. “We cried out, and he heard us. He promised that no youth in Mbaise would again be treated like a criminal without cause. For once, we felt the police cared about our future.”
True to his word, Danjuma deployed a monitoring team to the area and warned strongly against indiscriminate arrests. Civil society organisations say the intervention eased tensions and prevented possible clashes.
Voices from Within and Across Imo
With his promotion to AIG, tributes have poured in from Area Commanders across the state, who say his leadership style transformed internal discipline and morale.
“AIG Danjuma leads by example,” said ACP Mike Abatan, Area Commander, Owerri. “When he asked us to be visible and accountable, he was already doing it himself. That inspired officers across commands.”
From Orlu Zone, an Area Commander noted: “He insisted on proactive supervision. We no longer waited for petitions before acting. The message was clear—professional misconduct would not be tolerated anywhere in Imo.”
In Okigwe Area Command, a senior officer added: “He reminded us constantly that every action of an officer affects public trust. That mindset changed how we related with communities.”
Civil Society and Community Voices
Civil society groups say his promotion is well deserved. “His openness and swift response to complaints reduced tension across communities,” said Mr. Chinoso Ubah, a civil society advocate in the state. “Young people who once saw the police as enemies began to see them as partners.”
Community elders share similar sentiments. “For years, our people feared police checkpoints,” said Chief Emeka Nwosu of Mbaitoli. “Under Danjuma, the CP himself came out to ensure things were done properly. That sincerity restored confidence.”
The Man Behind the Badge
Officers recall him reminding young constables during training: “Every man you stop is someone’s son or father. When you extort, you are hurting a family like your own.”
Those close to him describe a disciplined early riser who prefers quiet reflection before field inspections. Despite his rank, he often drove himself, sometimes without a convoy, determined to experience policing from the people’s perspective.
A Legacy That Endures
As AIG Aboki Danjuma prepares to leave Imo State for higher national responsibility, many say his greatest achievement lies beyond statistics.
He showed that policing can be firm yet humane, authoritative yet compassionate.
For Mbaise youths, community elders, civil society voices, and Area Commanders across Imo, the verdict is unanimous: AIG Aboki Danjuma leaves behind a command that learned to police with a human face.
And for a public long weary of fear and distrust, that legacy may remain his most enduring contribution to national security.
