The Imo State Government has reaffirmed Mr. Kelechi Anosike as the substantive Chairman of the Imo State Basketball Association, dismissing speculations over a purported change in the leadership of the body.

In a statement issued by the Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, and addressed to the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), the government clarified that Anosike remains the recognised chairman, while Hon. Prince Francis Uzor continues to serve as Vice Chairman of the association until further notice.

The commissioner explained that the Ministry of Sports Development was compelled to issue the clarification following alleged statements and counter-statements from some quarters within and outside the state concerning the authentic leadership of basketball in Imo.

He stressed that the clarification became necessary to prevent any misunderstanding or misrepresentation of the state government’s official position on the matter.

Onyeocha stated that the tenure of Anosike and his executive has not been dissolved or terminated by the Imo State Government, the Ministry of Sports Development, or any authority acting on the instruction of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

He urged stakeholders to disregard any contrary directive capable of causing confusion in the administration of basketball in the state.

The commissioner further advised members of the basketball family and the general public to liaise directly with the Office of the Honourable Commissioner for Sports Development for issues relating to official activities and paraphernalia of the association.

The statement, which was copied to the National Sports Commission and other relevant stakeholders, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining stability and proper administrative structure in sports development across the state.

Boots For Grassroots Africa has officially appointed football legend Nwankwo Kanu as an Ambassador, strengthening the organisation’s mission to raise one million boots over the next ten years for underprivileged children across the continent.

Kanu, a former Super Eagles captain and one of Africa’s most decorated footballers, enjoyed an illustrious professional career in Europe, winning major honours with leading clubs. Beyond the pitch, he is widely respected for his long-standing commitment to youth development and social impact initiatives in Africa.

Boots For Grassroots Africa is a social impact organisation dedicated to improving access to sport by supplying football boots and equipment to disadvantaged children and grassroots teams. The initiative aims to remove basic barriers to participation, promote healthy lifestyles, and use sport as a tool for social inclusion and opportunity.

In his role as Ambassador, Kanu will leverage his profile, credibility, and experience to advance awareness, fundraising, and community engagement initiatives. His responsibilities will include advocating for the project’s mission, participating in media and digital campaigns, and engaging in selected community and fundraising events to highlight the importance of providing boots to children who need them most.

Imo State has intensified preparations for the second edition of the Niger Delta Games billed to hold in Edo State, with athletes across various sports stepping up training programmes ahead of the competition.

A visit to training venues across the state showed increased activities among athletes and coaches, as teams in athletics, football, basketball, handball, table tennis and taekwondo intensify preparations to represent the state at the regional sporting event.

Coaches and trainers have been working assiduously with athletes to improve their fitness level, technical abilities and team coordination.

Athletics athletes are currently focusing on speed, endurance and discipline, while the football team has stepped up tactical drills and physical conditioning to enhance performance.

Basketball players, Viva Herbert and Chukwueze Obi, expressed excitement at the opportunity to represent the state, assuring that the team is fully committed to achieving positive results at the games.

Similarly, handball players Lucky Udo and Chiyere Okeke said the team has intensified training sessions with determination to make Imo State proud.

Table tennis player, Udochukwu Udaku, expressed confidence in her preparation, stating that she is certain of finishing the competition with a podium performance.

Taekwondo athletes are concentrating on strength, flexibility and technical discipline, while Tony Ibe pledged to deliver an impressive performance, expressing confidence in his readiness for the competition.

Athletics athletes, Uche Vivian and Nomso Chukwuocha, described participation in the games as an opportunity to gain exposure and improve their sporting careers.

Officials have urged the athletes to maintain discipline and remain focused as the state targets an impressive performance at the Niger Delta Games.

The Chairman of the Imo State Football Association (FA), Barrister Ifeanyi Dike, has received in audience the Eze-elect of Odun’Izuoha Amuzi Autonomous Community in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area, Eze Vitalis Chikere, as part of efforts to strengthen grassroots football development in the state.

Eze Chikere was accompanied on the visit by the Football Administrator of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Football Administration, Mr. Kennedy Onwunali.

The meeting, which took place in Dike’s office, focused on areas of mutual cooperation aimed at advancing football growth across Imo State. Both leaders discussed strategies that would enhance community participation and improve the standard of the game at the grassroots level.

The visit comes at a time the Imo FA is receiving commendations from stakeholders following a major milestone recorded in this year’s FA Cup registration.

A total of 32 teams successfully registered to participate in the competition, a development widely regarded as a significant boost for football development in the state.

Observers believe the growing interest in the state FA Cup reflects renewed confidence in the leadership of the football governing body, as well as increasing grassroots engagement in the sport.

Barrister Dike reaffirmed the association’s commitment to inclusive football development, noting that partnerships with traditional institutions and community leaders remain vital to sustaining progress in the game.

The Eze-elect, in his remarks, expressed readiness to support initiatives that would promote youth engagement through sports, particularly football, within his community and beyond.

Basketball stakeholders in Imo State have raised concerns over the alleged dissolution of the Imo State Basketball Association Board by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Diaspora Affairs and Sports Development, Mr. Kingsley Ogwudire, questioning his authority to take such action without the approval of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The stakeholders argued that, constitutionally, only the Governor, Commissioner and director of Sports possess the authority to appoint or dissolve leadership of sports associations in the state.

Speaking separately on the development, a basketball enthusiast, Mr. Chinedu Eke, alongside Mr. Ugo Obinna and basketball developer, Mr. Philip Madu, described the reported dissolution as surprising and worrisome.

According to them, Mr. Ogwudire, who was appointed over a year ago by the Uzodimma-led administration, is yet to record significant achievements in sports development in the state.

The stakeholders recalled that shortly after assuming office, the Governor’s Special Adviser reportedly promised to organise a world-class basketball championship in Imo State.

However, they noted that the proposed event has yet to materialise.

They further alleged that the decision to dissolve the association board could be linked to personal ambitions aimed at influencing basketball administration at the national level, a development they claimed has not yielded positive results in previous attempts by interested parties.

The trio advised the United States-based man to focus more on delivering measurable sports development programmes in Imo State rather than engaging in what they described as unnecessary administrative conflicts within the basketball community.

They also expressed concern over the possible implications of the reported decision on other sports associations in the state and called on relevant authorities to clarify the situation to avoid confusion among stakeholders.

Efforts to obtain an official response from Mr. Ogwudire were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

South-East basketball stakeholders have raised strong concerns over what they describe as growing political manoeuvring within Nigerian basketball, particularly regarding the alleged campaign activities of FIBA Africa Zone 3 President, Col. Sam Ahmedu, on behalf of former national team captain, Olumide Oyedeji.

The stakeholders insist that if Oyedeji truly believes he is qualified to lead Nigerian basketball, he should openly declare his ambition and present his vision directly to the basketball community rather than allegedly operating through proxies.

According to them, leadership must be built on clarity, courage, and accountability — not backroom negotiations or political godfatherism.

“We want openness and direct engagement with stakeholders. Anyone seeking leadership should come out and speak for himself,” said “Chinedu Okafor, a basketball stakeholder from Enugu.”

The group expressed concern over Ahmedu’s reported campaign activities in the South-East, noting that the zone already has a duly elected representative on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) board. They argued that such actions raise questions about external influence and political engineering within the federation.

“This is not about stabilising basketball. It appears to be about power, influence, and positioning,” noted “Emeka Nwosu, a club administrator in Anambra State.”

The stakeholders maintained that if Oyedeji has a genuine leadership agenda, he should present it publicly and allow stakeholders to evaluate it on merit.

“If Oyedeji has a vision, let him present it. If he has a plan, let him defend it publicly. Stakeholders deserve to see a clear roadmap for Nigerian basketball,” said “Ifeanyi Ugwu, a youth basketball development coach in Abia State.”

They further criticised what they described as increasing attacks and propaganda targeting the current NBBF leadership, warning that criticism without workable alternatives cannot drive development.

Casting their attention on the current administration, the stakeholders commended the leadership of NBBF President, Engr. Musa Kida, describing the board as one of the most impactful in the history of Nigerian basketball.

They noted that despite numerous challenges and opposition from some quarters, the Kida-led administration has maintained stability and recorded measurable progress in the sport.
“The current board has ensured continuity and development despite distractions. That progress should be acknowledged,” Ugwu added.

The stakeholders also dismissed a recently circulated document allegedly aimed at discrediting the present leadership, stating that the document lacks authenticity and necessary official endorsements to be considered legitimate.
Beyond political concerns, the stakeholders challenged Oyedeji and any other aspirant to present concrete development strategies that address key areas of Nigerian basketball growth.

They listed critical expectations including a long-term development blueprint, sustainable funding strategies, league reform models, grassroots and youth development pipelines, and structured improvements in coaching, officiating, and governance.

“Transparency is simple,” one stakeholder stated. “Show us your development plan. Show us your funding model. Show us your strategy for grassroots basketball. Then stakeholders will listen, debate, and decide.”

They warned against what they described as shadow campaigns, proxy politics, and attempts to pressure stakeholders through influence rather than ideas.

“The South-East is not ignorant. Nigerian basketball stakeholders understand what is happening. If anyone wants our support, they must earn it through competence, integrity, and clear vision,” Okafor added.

Reaffirming their position on the federation’s current leadership structure, the stakeholders stated that the Musa Kida-led board remains the duly inaugurated and legitimate authority of the NBBF and should be allowed to complete its constitutional tenure, which runs until October.
They concluded by calling for unity, transparency, and issue-based engagement across the basketball community, stressing that Nigerian basketball needs genuine leadership, clear ideas, and collective progress rather than political theatrics.

“If you want to lead, come forward with your agenda. Nigerian basketball deserves honesty and courage,” the stakeholders stated.

The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, heartily congratulates the government and good people of Imo State on the golden jubilee of the state’s creation, marking 50 years of existence from February 3, 1976 to February 3, 2026.

In a press statement sanctioned by the Imo SWAN Chairman, Cosmos Chukwuemeka and authored by the Secretary, Tunde Liadi, Imo SWAN noted that this historic milestone offers a moment of reflection on the remarkable journey of Imo State, its achievements, challenges, resilience, and enduring contributions to Nigerian sports and national development.

From inception, sports, particularly football, have served as a unifying force and a symbol of identity for Ndi Imo. Shortly after the creation of the state in 1976, Spartans Football Club was established, mirroring the success model of Enugu Rangers. The club announced Imo State’s arrival on the national and international stage with a memorable 2–0 victory over Ararat Yerevan of the then USSR in August 1976 at the Township Stadium, Owerri.

The acquisition of Spartans FC by Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu and its transformation into Iwuanyanwu Nationale ushered in a golden era. The club’s heroic comeback against FAR Rabat of Morocco in the 1988 CAF Champions Cup semifinal, overturning a 4–1 first-leg deficit to qualify for the final, remains one of the most iconic moments in African club football history.

Though later renamed Heartland FC, the club fondly called the Naze Millionaires, has experienced both decline and revival, including relegation battles in the 2010s and a return to government ownership in 2006. Its resilience reflects the spirit of Imo State itself.

The introduction of the Dan Anyiam Cup in 2024 by the Technical Manager of Heartland FC, Emmanuel Amuneke, honouring Nigeria’s first national team captain, further reaffirmed Imo’s respect for sporting heritage.

Imo State’s sporting pride reached its zenith in 1996, when Chioma Ajunwa, a daughter of Umuihiokwu in Ahiazu Mbaise Local Government Area of the State, etched her name in global history by winning Nigeria’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal in the women’s long jump at the Atlanta Games. Her feat remains a beacon of inspiration for generations of Imo athletes.

In recent years, Imo-born stars have continued to shine, particularly in women’s football. The state proudly celebrated its daughters; Chiamaka Nnadozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tochukwu Oluchi, and others, following Nigeria’s landmark 10th WAFCON triumph in 2025 in Morocco, hosted by Governor Hope Uzodinma.

The hosting of the 13th Imo State Sports Festival in 2019 championed by the former Executive Chairman, Imo Sports Commission, Chief Fan Ndubuoke under the regime of Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha. The rehabilitated Dan Anyiam Stadium and the Imo Grasshoppers Stadium, marked a deliberate attempt to revive grassroots sports development, reaffirming the state’s commitment to nurturing talent across football, athletics, volleyball, basketball, and other sports.

As a body of professionals dedicated to documenting, promoting, and critiquing sports and societal development, SWAN Imo believes that sports remain a powerful tool for unity, youth engagement, and economic growth in the next phase of the state’s journey.

At 50, Imo State stands tall, rich in history, blessed with talent, and poised for greater heights. The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Imo State Chapter, calls for renewed commitment by all stakeholders to preserve the state’s sporting heritage, invest in grassroots development, and ensure that the next 50 years deliver prosperity, peace, and pride for Ndi Imo.
