The Chairman of the Imo State Basketball Association, Kelechi Anosike, has called on Old Boys and Girls Associations of secondary schools across Imo State to emulate the commendable efforts of the Federal Government Girls’ College (FGGC) Owerri Old Girls Association. The association recently constructed world-class basketball and tennis courts at the FGGC Owerri campus, setting a standard for modern sports infrastructure in the state.
In an open letter available to www.silvernews.com.ng. Anosike highlighted the global popularity of basketball and the significant potential for growth within Imo State if similar facilities are built in other schools. According to him, the state-of-the-art courts at FGGC Owerri are a testament to what can be achieved when alumni come together with a shared vision.
“The FGGC Owerri courts are a marvel to behold and are second to none in Imo State,” he said. “If Old Boys and Girls Associations of other secondary schools invest in constructing modern basketball courts and other sports facilities, it will not only benefit the schools but also nurture young talent to national and international prominence.”
Anosike emphasized that sports, particularly basketball, is a youthful activity that thrives on early exposure and proper training. He urged alumni associations to channel resources into such developmental projects instead of focusing solely on social gatherings and reunions.
“Building these facilities is a way of giving back to the schools that shaped us,” he said. “It also provides a constructive outlet for the youth, addressing issues like restiveness and promoting discipline and teamwork.”
The Imo State Basketball Association expressed its readiness to partner with alumni associations, offering technical expertise and training to students. “We have skilled male and female coaches who are ready to mentor these young players and help them reach their full potential,” Anosike added.
He also pointed out the economic benefits of investing in sports infrastructure. The recently concluded sports carnival at FGGC Owerri, made successful by the availability of modern courts, serves as a prime example of how such investments can boost school pride and generate revenue.
Anosike concluded by calling on school principals to collaborate with alumni associations, ensuring quality and effective execution of projects. He believes this initiative will not only strengthen school communities but also support the government’s efforts in curbing youth restiveness.
The Chairman urged all alumni associations to take up the challenge, stating, “By constructing befitting basketball courts, we are building a brighter future for our youth and contributing positively to society. Let us rise to this call.
