Onitsha Sports Club recorded a closely fought 3-2 victory over Standard Tennis Development Club, STDC, of Owerri, to emerge second time winners of the East of the Niger Inter Club, ENIC, Tennis League.
The final spilled over to the next day before kufreAbasi Spencer broke the former undisputed singles champion Perez Ateh in the final game of the 24-year-old tournament in a dramatic set, of the game that lasted for over three hours.
The ENIC Chairman Dr. Augustine Uzodike congratulated Onitsha Sports Club for the victory and promised that the 25th edition of the longest running regional tennis championship, in South Eastern Nigeria, will be well celebrated by member clubs across the country.
He then congratulated Cutix Plc for standing by the league in the last 24 years as worthy partners.
Speaking futher, the CEO of Cutix Plc, Mrs Iheoma Oduonye, said the company will keep supporting the tournament, in line with the vision of the founder of the company Dr, Gilbert Uzodike; and the promise he made 24 years ago, when the tournament was inaugurated.
She also commended the nation’s number one tennis player Uchenna Oparaoji, a product of ENIC Junior tennis championship.
Meanwhile, Trustees of the league, Mr Chukwuemeka Azie and Dr Kachi Nwoga, have reassured that the 25th celebration of the league will be a bumper edition, and designed to reflect the essence of the tournament which wes started at Aba Sports Club by Mr Austin Agbaje, with the goal of uniting all the tennis teams on the south east and south south regions of the country.
This year’s final saw the introduction of four demonstration games into the Championship.
