Rivers United’s Chijioke Akuneto leads the race for the most individual goals (18) in the legaue ahead of the final day in the Nigeria Professional Football League.
He is closely followed by Victor Mbaoma of Enyimba with 16 goals, Yusuf Abdulazeez of Gombe United with 16 goals while the duo of Valentine Odoh of Abia Warriors and Rafiu Ishaq of Rivers United are on 14 goals respectively.
The 2021/22 Eunisell Golden Boot, leading goals scorer said his best is yet to come as he hopes to score in the final game of the season to increase his goal hurl.
Speaking with Wakawaka Sports Extra, the former Heartland and MFM star said he has enjoyed a great season in Rivers United because of the technical ability of Coach Stanley Eguma to spot and understand his type of play which even made it more easy for him to adapt well in the team.
He added that even when his goals were not coming early in the season the coach kept faith with him which made him to work harder to repay the coach and all his technical crew for all the good work they were doing for the team.
The Rivers United goal poacher said the turning point in his career this season was when he pitched tent with Rivers United, which was not an easy decision having spent years with his mentor Coach Fidelis Ilechukwu.
He declared that he had to be a man and move on believing he will make him proud which he has finally done with the support of Barr. Chris Green who will always congratulate him for a job well done.
The reliable striker said his manager, Mr Daniel Eke, played a major role in bringing him to Rivers United which at the end of the day became a good move because salary and other entitlement comes at the right time as approved by the state government led by Barrister Chris Green.
He revealed that some players who came from clubs where payment of salary were delayed became more determined to win the league to repay the Rivers State Govenor, Nyesom Wike for his fatherly support to the team.
