The term “SPORTS” is referred to as competitive physical and mental activities involving an individual or group of persons.These Competitive activities however,involves physical exertion and skill and are also governed by rules.Sports is one of the most essential activities of human beings.It is one activity that has so many characteristics,As a competitive activity,it sharpens the spirit of win or loose,which is an indispensable part of business in general although,most sporting activities can be professional or past time.Sports also is a veritable tool for public Relations and Community Policing because its mobilization,partnership,participation and problem solving abilities/attributes hence the need to reflect on the theme of this years United Nations(UN) International Day of Sports For Development and Peace(April 6) which placed importance and recognition on the power of Sport in promoting Peace and Erasing Cultural barriers worldwide.
According the president of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) Thomas Bach,2013,”Sports promotes integration,It boosts Self Esteem as well as Joy of Life.The Integrative Power of Sport can work its magic in crisis areas,helping to build understanding and reconciliation ,and at the same time improve quality of life.This also includes:Improving Health and Well being,Putting Children and young people on a positive life course,building stronger and more inclusive communities.
As the Country joins the rest of the World to mark 2022 United Nations(UN) Day of Sports for Development and Peace (April 6),it is pertinent for stakeholders and multi Agencies including Government at all levels to look at these core values that sports offers for Development and peace and for a greater society as what remain to be determined are the degrees of commitment accorded to sports growth and Development.They include Fair Play,Social Justice,Discipline,Self Discovery,Creation
of Employment opportunities,Means of enhancing Education ,Promotion of
Culture,Promotion of Social Mobilization ,harmony and National
Integration,Promotion of ideals of democracy amongst others and work
harmoniously to improve Olympic Sports Education for Olympic Sports value
which places Sports at the Service of HumanKind and with a vision of building a
better world through sports.
Unarguably, Sports can be used to effect social changes in our communities for peaceful co-existence and harmonious relationship thus discouraging inter and intra community acrimony ,gender inequality,Unlawful society(Cultism),Substance and Drug Abuse,Unrestrained Aggression which is a highway to extremist Violence,Ethnic and Religious Segregation amongst others and that account for why the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices(POCACOV) the NPF Community policing Initiative and Public Relations Tool working with different stakeholders and multi Agencies ,is making use of the instrumentality of Sports under its Forum,Committee mobilization and Activity base programs to mobilize stakeholders and Multi Agencies for support and Partnership and enhancing their participation towards problem Solving in line with the Community Policing Framework for a safe,peaceful and Secured Communities/Schools.POCACOV is also promoting olympic Sports Education in
communities and schools through stakeholders and Multi Agencies Partnership
towards the attainment of Olympic Sports vision of building a better
society/world through Sports to achieve Olympic Sports Value of Excellence,Respect
