Silversports Football Club of Aboh Mbaise has made a return to the Imo State League, 16 years after its last participation in the competition.
The club, owned by the Chief Executive Officer of Silvernews Communication, Mr Kennedy Onwunali, made a strong statement during its first appearance in the league 16 years ago, proving its competitiveness by holding their own against established teams and drawing all three of their league matches, including a notable encounter with eventual league winners, Mnamohа FC.
On their return to the competition, Silversports have intensified preparations with a series of friendly matches. The team recorded two victories and two defeats in one phase of its build-up, with one of the defeats coming against Emirate FC.
The young side has continued to show promise ahead of the new league season, with impressive outing in her games as they are in the league to gain experience for the future.
The team is built around talented players under the age of 20, most of whom are secondary school students. To add experience and leadership to the squad, four players from the senior team that featured in last year’s Imo State Club Owners League have been added.
Silversports are being guided by experienced coach Frank Mbata, a respected figure in grassroots football development in Imo State. Mbata was part of the coaching crew credited with discovering and nurturing talents including Kelechi Iheanacho and other young players who went on to make an impact in football.
The increase in the number of participating clubs in the Imo State League has been linked to the leadership direction and emphasis on grassroots football development by the Barrister Ifeanyi Dike-led Imo State Football Association, providing more opportunities for clubs and emerging talents across the state.
Meanwhile, the Imo FA has announced that the draws for the 2026 league season will hold on Thursday, June 18, 2026, at 11am at the Imo FA office.
According to the Assistant Secretary of Imo FA, Comrade Emeka Nwaokorie, officials of the 17 registered clubs are expected to attend the draw ceremony with evidence of their 2026 affiliation and registration for the league.
The return of Silversports FC signals another chapter in the club’s history as it continues its mission of promoting youth development and competitive football in Imo State.
