Seven-year-olds Henry Awoyo and Imisioluwa Quadri became the centre of attraction as the penultimate zonal qualifiers of the RIYE Under-15 Athletics Circuit took place at the Gateway Stadium, Sagamu, Ogun State on Tuesday, 23rd June, 2026.
While several young athletes secured qualification spots for the grand finale scheduled for June 26, 2026, at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Abeokuta, it was Henry and Imisi’s determination, courage and remarkable performances that captured the attention of spectators and organisers alike.
Competing against older athletes, the youngsters, both seven year old displayed exceptional zeal and commitment, crossing the finish line in the 100 metres in under 20 seconds. Their performances drew applause from the crowd and earned special recognition from the organiser of the competition, Hon. Tunde Delu.
Hon. Delu commended the parents of the kids for nurturing their children’s interest in athletics.
“I specifically commend Mr. Alaba Awoyo and Imisi’s parents, for encouraging the young boys. The kids are genuinely interested and we will support their development.
“If they are running under 20 seconds in the 100 metres at just seven years old, then we have future world champions on our hands that we must continue to monitor and encourage.”
Hon. Delu also praised members of the organising committee for their dedication and hard work in ensuring the smooth running of the competition across the various zones. He expressed satisfaction with the impressive turnout recorded in Abeokuta, Ilaro, and Sagamu.
The RIYE Under-15 Athletics Circuit continues to gather momentum as the final zonal qualifiers are currently taking place at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode, where more athletes are battling for qualification spots ahead of Friday’s grand finale in Abeokuta.
The initiative, powered by the Tunde Delu Initiative, is aimed at discovering, nurturing, and developing young athletic talents across Ogun State, providing a platform for the next generation of champions to showcase their abilities.
