The hallmark of every leader is result-based management through the utilisation of resources, personnel and programs with measurable results.
This is akin to the long-serving General Manager of Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club, Ifie Ozaka, who has successfully built a culture of excellence, collaboration and accountability at the club.
On Tuesday, 22 September, 2026, Rivers Hoopers (nicknamed “The KingsMen”), reinforced their pedigree as one of the most successful basketball franchises in Nigerian sports history to reclaim the Nigeria Premier Basketball League (NPBL) for the seventh time.
They secured the national championship with a game to spare at the 2026 NPBL Final Four, draining 12 three-pointers to dismantle Gboko City Chiefs 88-76 on Day Two of the playoffs.
*Hasty Judgement: How Ozaka’s Effective Management Responded to Call for Complete Overhaul*
Contextually, a communique issued at the end of the congress of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers State Chapter, which held on 7 July 2026, called for the complete overhaul of the management teams of all state-owned sports clubs. With reference to Rivers Hoopers in item number 2c of the communique, they noted that the team are ‘equally experiencing decline occasioned by poor management.’
While it becomes imperative for anyone in leadership position to be subjected to scrutiny and criticism by individuals, bodies, organisations, etc, it behoves on the critics to criticise constructively.
In the context of sports administrators, constructive criticism that is specific, objective and actionable aimed at improving performance, decision-making or behaviour can enhance public trust and confidence.
Regrettably, the aforementioned characteristics of constructive criticism and more importantly, as the primary duty of the press to hold governments, corporations, and individuals accountable to the public was eroded.
Prior to the period the communique was issued, Ozaka’s led Rivers Hoopers were on course to securing a third consecutive league title in 2025 but were edged out in two agonisingly narrow losses to eventual champions Lagos Legends (Maktown Flyers), first in the playoffs phase and later grand finale.
The jarring question is to why the hasty judgement against a team that have enjoyed a rich vein of form prior to the 2025 NPBL. One would have expected the body to give room to the Ozaka led management to right the wrongs in the 2026 NPBL and possibly proffered solutions as a body.
Despite the flawed assessment of the team ‘experiencing decline occasioned by poor management,’ the astute administrator, alongside a vibrant and experienced coaching crew led by Ogoh Odaudu responded in the best possible manner to reclaim the championship.

As Theodore Roosevelt once said, ‘It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.’
With strategic planning, deliberate policies and quest for success, Ozaka once again added another title to his illustrious glittering managerial career for a record seventh championship on home soil within two months after the communique was issued.
On the domestic front, he led Rivers Hoopers to NPBL titles in 2011, 2012, 2019, 2021, 2023, 2024, 2026; won several premier national tournaments, including the Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) Basketball Cup, the Crown Elite Sports Basketball Championship, and the Louis Edem Foundation Basketball Championship.
In the continent, the team under his tutelage won the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Champions (2018), Basketball Africa League (BAL) Sahara Conference Champions (2024) and made history as the first Nigerian club side to reach the podium at the BAL, securing the bronze medal in Kigali, Rwanda in 2024. Others include, inaugural BAL Representatives (2021) where they represented Nigeria in the historic inaugural season.
Conclusively, the pendulum has swung to the body to either congratulate the management team and set the agenda for the Rivers State government to host the victorious KingsMen and begin early preparations for the BAL.
