The First Vice President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Alhaji Abubakar Ladan Zurmi, has commended Nigerian track and field stars Kanyinsola Ajayi, Tobi Amusan, and other elite athletes for their impressive performances at recent international meets, describing their achievements as a positive signal ahead of the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Scotland.
Zurmi said the outstanding displays by the country’s top athletes have reinforced confidence in Team Nigeria’s readiness to compete strongly against the world’s best at the multi-sport event. He noted that the recent performances have demonstrated the quality, determination, and growing depth of Nigerian athletics.
The AFN First Vice President also showered praises on Nigeria’s junior athletes currently competing at the CAA Region 2 Under-18/Under-20 Athletics Championships in Dakar, Senegal, for their remarkable performances and medal-winning efforts.
According to him, the exploits of the young athletes in Dakar are a testament to the effectiveness of the federation’s grassroots development programmes and a clear indication that the future of Nigerian athletics is in safe hands.
“I am delighted with the performances of our senior athletes, especially Kanyinsola Ajayi, Tobi Amusan, and others who continue to fly the Nigerian flag with pride on the international stage. Their recent achievements are encouraging and show that Team Nigeria is on the right path ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Scotland,” Zurmi said.
He added, “I must also commend our junior athletes in Dakar for making Nigeria proud at the CAA Region 2 Under-18 and Under-20 Championships. Their dedication, discipline, and determination are worthy of commendation.
They have shown that Nigeria possesses an abundance of young talents capable of excelling on the global stage.”
Zurmi urged both the senior and junior athletes to remain focused and continue working hard, assuring them of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria’s unwavering support as they strive for greater success in future international competitions.
He expressed confidence that with sustained commitment from the athletes, coaches, administrators, and other stakeholders, Nigerian athletics will continue to achieve greater heights and strengthen its position as one of Africa’s leading athletics nations.
