Umuahia — Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has rewarded a Nigerian Army Staff Sergeant, Amoke Gunshot Simeon, for his gallant service during the height of insecurity in the state, offering him full sponsorship for overseas medical treatment.
The governor made the offer on Thursday, March 19, during a meeting with the soldier at Government House, Umuahia, in recognition of his role in tackling criminal activities, including the operation that led to the neutralisation of notorious kidnapping kingpin, Osisikankwu.
Simeon, who served in Abia State between 2010 and 2014, was part of a special military team tasked with tracking and dismantling kidnapping networks that once held the state under siege.
Speaking with journalists after the meeting, the soldier, who now walks with the aid of crutches, recounted how he sustained severe injuries in a motor accident while on active duty in the North-East after his deployment from Abia.
He said the injuries, which affected his legs, were poorly managed, leading to prolonged health challenges.
“I am very happy and excited that the governor remembered those of us who fought for peace in Abia State. This kind of gesture will motivate other military personnel to remain committed to their duties,” Simeon said.
He disclosed that during the anti-kidnapping operations, he was offered N50 million by the criminal gang to compromise the mission, an offer he rejected.
“I was promised money—N50 million—to allow them continue their activities, but I refused. Today, I am proud of that decision,” he added.
Simeon expressed gratitude to the state government for the intervention, noting that the offer of overseas medical treatment would help him regain full health.
Governor Otti, according to sources at the meeting, assured the former operative that the state would bear the full cost of his treatment abroad, with a view to restoring him to sound health.
The soldier also described the governor as compassionate and attentive, likening the encounter to “sitting beside a father.”
Simeon maintained that the success of the military operation against criminal elements, including the takedown of Osisikankwu, restored peace and confidence in Abia State, which had previously witnessed mass displacement of residents due to insecurity.
He emphasised that integrity and dedication to duty remain rewarding, urging security personnel to remain steadfast in the face of temptation.
The event underscores the state government’s commitment to recognising individuals who contributed to restoring peace during Abia’s most challenging security period.
