Niger Tornadoes extended their unbeaten run to three matches following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ikorodu City in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday Nine encounter at the Bako Kontagora Stadium in Minna.
Goals in either half from sensational Nafiu Obalowu and Bashir Musa ensured the Ikon Allah Boys secured maximum points despite a late scare from the visitors.
The encounter began on a cagey note, with both sides cautiously probing for openings and seeking to establish control. However, Tornadoes gradually grew into the contest, creating several scoring opportunities but failing to convert their early chances.
The breakthrough eventually arrived midway through the first half when the hosts capitalised on a defensive mix-up in the Ikorodu City backline. Wasiu Jimoh reacted quickly to the situation, setting up Nafiu Obalowu, who calmly slotted home to give the Ikon Allah Boys a deserved lead.
Ikorodu City offered little attacking threat before the interval, with goalkeeper Derrick Julu comfortably dealing with the few attempts that came his way.
Determined to maintain their attacking momentum, Tornadoes introduced the pacey and enterprising Joseph Bulus shortly after the restart. The winger wasted little time making his presence felt, troubling the visitors’ defence with his dazzling footwork, pace and intelligent movement.
With the hosts pushing for a second goal to put the contest beyond their opponents, the technical crew further strengthened the attack with the introductions of Daniel Hussaini and Bashir Musa.
The tactical adjustments eventually paid dividends in the 82nd minute when Bashir Musa reacted quickest to a rebound after Ikorodu City goalkeeper Michael Atata had parried an initial effort, firing home to double Tornadoes’ advantage.
Just when the home supporters appeared set to celebrate a comfortable victory, Ikorodu City pulled a goal back in the second minute of stoppage time. Ayinde Basit’s effort slipped through the fingers of goalkeeper Derrick Julu and into the net.
However, the Ikon Allah Boys held firm to secure a vital victory and extend their unbeaten streak to three matches.
The result lifts Niger Tornadoes from 15th to 11th position on the NPFL standings and will travel next to Aba for a Matchday Ten encounter against Abia Warriors.
