A major crisis was narrowly averted this week in Owerri after a confrontation between task force operatives and special citizens who trade around the Dan Anyiam Stadium escalated into a situation where Nze Chinasa Nwaneri was allegedly held up by the traders.
The incident unfolded at the stadium entrance when the Special Adviser on Monitoring and Compliance, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri , arrived with his enforcement team to clear traders from the area.
Tension erupted when task force operatives allegedly attacked the traders—many of whom are disabled and state athletes who have not received stipends for years of service to the state—and threw their goods away.
These individuals rely on petty trading to survive while still representing the state in competitions.
Infuriated by the harassment, the special citizens—known for past mass actions that have shut down activities in the state—engaged the officials. In the heated clash, Nze Chinasa Nwaneri and members of his security team were overpowered by two women and allegedly held up for several tense minutes.
Eyewitnesses said the once-powerful aide was left helpless as angry sportswomen demanded justice and the restoration of their scattered goods.
Calm returned only after tempers cooled.
The taskforce later regrouped the displaced items before they allowed Nwaneri and his team to leave.
No injuries were recorded, but the confrontation caused panic across the stadium area and reignited debates about the government’s handling of vulnerable groups and unpaid athletes.
