Heartland Queens began their 2025/2026 NWFL Premiership season on a winning note, coming from behind to secure a 2–1 victory over Ekiti Queens in a spirited Matchday 1 fixture at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
The visitors stunned the home supporters just four minutes into the contest as Amarachi Okoronkwo capitalised on a defensive lapse to put Ekiti Queens ahead. The early setback, however, jolted the hosts into action.
Heartland Queens responded with urgency, pressing higher and forcing errors from the Ekiti backline. Their push paid off in the 13th minute when the referee pointed to the spot following a handball in the area. Chizoba Johnson converted confidently to level the score.
With momentum on their side, the Owerri side continued to dominate possession and were rewarded again in the 36th minute. Emmanuella James found herself in space and rifled home the second goal to complete the turnaround.
The second half was more measured, with Heartland Queens displaying composure to keep their opponents at bay despite Ekiti Queens’ attempts to claw their way back into the match.
The hosts held firm to protect their lead and secure all three points.
With a morale-boosting win to open their campaign,
Heartland Queens will next travel to Benin City for a challenging encounter against Edo Queens, who are seeking a response after losing their first match to Bayelsa Queens.
