Former athletes from Imo State, under the banner of the Ex-International Sports Men and Women Association (Imo Chapter), yesterday paid a courtesy visit to marathon legend Mrs. Maria Oguoma in appreciation of her outstanding contributions to athletics and sports development in the state. Oguoma, a renowned long-distance runner in Africa, had proudly represented Imo in numerous national competitions, earning recognition and inspiring future generations of athletes.
The delegation, led by the association’s president, Godson Osuigwe (aka Amiyaka), emphasized the need for unity and mutual support among former athletes. “Since the government has many responsibilities, we must not forget to support one another,” he said, encouraging solidarity within the sports community.
Among the dignitaries present were Mr. Tony Ajaelu, former Commissioner for Sports; Mr. Okechukwu Anyiam, President of the Standard Tennis Development Club; and Chief Emmanuel Metu, a former Director of Sports former president Ex Iwuanyawu Nationale players Union. Mr Casmier Mbachu They all praised the initiative, describing it as a timely and meaningful way to honor a sporting icon. Mr Ajaelu noted that such gestures serve as motivation for young athletes and reinforce the value of remembering sporting heroes while they are still alive.
Sir Ferdinand Emeagha, another former Director of Sports, presented a commemorative gift to Mrs. Oguoma and delivered the vote of thanks. The visit ended on a warm and emotional note, with Oguoma expressing deep gratitude and calling for continued support for retired athletes. The occasion reignited the call for improved welfare and recognition for former sportsmen and women who once brought glory to Imo State and Nigeria.
