The Patron, Imo State Boxing Association, Stanley Ogbonna has assured that the State contingent in the Boxing event will make the State proud at the upcoming National Youth Games, Silvernews.com.ng reports.
Speaking during the preparations for the Games at the Indoor Sports Hall of the Imo State Sports Commission, he noted that he is driven by passion for the sport.
He decried the negligence of the sport by government noting that if he becomes the South-East Zonal Chairman, there will be changes in the sport.
“We are here to showcase our talents and readiness for the upcoming sports that will come up in Asaba. It’s not about being a patron but passion and affection for sports. We believe by God’s grace, we will do Imo State proud in Asaba.
“The problem we have with sports generally in Imo State is sponsorship and adequate financing from government. But right now, some of us came out as sole philanthropist.
“We need to do that which government has refused to do to ensure the passion we have for this sport grows. If we invest into it, the Tiger will be child’s play to this future generation we have right now.
“I hope someday, very soon I will be the South-East Zonal Chairman of Boxing. My mission is to ensure I integrate boxing into a higher realm. So, people stop seeing football only where they should invest.
“When we invest properly, talk to those in national let them see the need why football should even be seen below boxing, we will get there. I have a vision for that but as I am coming in, we will do better than that.”
