The highly anticipated matchday 4 fixture of the Nigeria Women Football League Super Six between Rivers Angels and Confluence Queens lived up to expectations, thrilling fans at the Samson Siasia Stadium on Friday.
Rivers Angels demonstrated their intent and purpose from the starting whistle, pushing for an early goal. Although Chiamaka Okwuchukwu’s initial shot went wide, Confluence Queens’ chance in the 37th minute was thwarted by Florence Alexander’s timely clearance.
In the second half, Rivers Angels persisted, with Blessing Okpe’s chance in the 57th minute going wide. However, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu broke the deadlock in the 70th minute from Blessing Okpe’s corner kick and sealed the victory with her brace in the 90th minute.
Coach Whyte Ogbonda acknowledged how challenging the match was , stating, “It wasn’t an easy game, but securing the maximum points was crucial.” He praised the collective effort of his players, particularly Peace Effiong and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, for their fighting spirit throughout the match. “We played with anxiety in the first half but salvaged the 3 points at stake.”
Ahead of the final game against Heartland Queens on Sunday, Ogbonda emphasized the importance of securing maximum points to lift the trophy. “Our mindset is to ensure we get the 3 points and go home with the trophy.”
Captain Catherine Kenneth admitted that the team lost several chances due to anxiety but fought hard to secure the victory. She emphasized that the final match against Heartland Queens will not be taken for granted, and the team will fight hard to ensure a positive result. “We’ll go back to the drawing board, correct our mistakes, and ensure we don’t repeat them.”
The final match against Heartland Queens on Sunday will be played simultaneously with the match between Bayelsa Queens and Edo Queens, with both matches kicking off at 12 pm at Nembe City Stadium and Samson Siasia Stadium, respectively.
