NWFL Premiership side, Heartland Queens have been drawn against nonleague side, Golden Sun of Bayelsa State in the 2024 Federation Cup round of 32 games.
In the Federation Cup draws on Thursday, April 18 in Abuja the Owerri mainstreams will kick start her title chase against vice champions and minnows from Yenagoa on a date and venue yet to be fixed by the football governing body, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). The format will be the same as previously, a straight knockout from start to finish.
Heartland Queens best performances in the oldest and glamorous Cup competition in the land was the quarterfinals efforts in the 2022 edition of the annual football showdown. The side were actually stopped by the reigning league champions, Delta Queens.
However, after a booster survival in the hands of the Watersmeet side, Confluence Queens in the round of 32 in the immediate past Cup competition, the Owerri landladies shockingly and surprisingly felled to the NWFL Championship side, Lakeside Queens in the round of 16.
The Owerri side are back to back Cup champions of the state, Imo where this time around they are lone campaigners from the state in the 2024 national competition.
Given the side’s enviable and superlative performances in the ongoing regular season of the 2023/24 NWFL Premiership where they have already picked their first time ever Super Six ticket with a game to spare at topflight newcomers, Dannaz Ladies in Lagos next week Wednesday, the Imo state representatives are sure candidates to contest for the podium dance when curtains will fell on this year’s games.
