In its determination to ensure hitch free general elections in 2023, the Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre(CISLAC) has charged Political Parties and their candidates with commitments to signing peace accords.

The Executive Director, Auwa Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani), CISLAC gave this charge on Thursday 2nd February,2023 at Owerri, Imo State State.

The Director who was represented at the briefing by the Program Manager, Democratic Governance, Mr. Okereke Anya maintained that the peace accord would not only focus on issue-based Campaigns rather bind them to shunning hate speech, peddling of fake news, political thuggery and other acts that could heat up the polity and stroke up electoral violence.

He said: “The peace accord is expected to bind stakeholders to bear on their supporters and party agents the need to maintain peace throughout the election period and beyond”.

He recalled that the maiden peace accord in Imo State was signed by governorship candidates ahead 2019 election initiated by Civil Society and security agencies.

According to him, it was a commendable show of commitments to none-violent elections demonstrated by leadership of various Political parties in the state.

He therefore disclosed that the non-state actors with the leadership of Political parties committed to signing peace accords by 10th February 2023 towards the 2023 general elections.

Anya regretted the inability of Bureau for Peace and Conflict Resolution established in 2011 to take ownership of coordinating the process to institutionalize the signing of Peace accords in Imo State.

Giving reasons, the Civil Society Organization noted that the peace pact include the need to build consensus among electoral stakeholders in the state as well as bestowing on electorates.
