Mbaise-based Silversports FC has unveiled United States-based community leader and Chairman of the Mbaise Policy Roundtable, Prof. Eddie Oparaoji, as the Patron of the club in a move aimed at strengthening its grassroots football development programme.
The unveiling, which took place during a brief ceremony, marks another milestone in the club’s commitment to youth development and community-driven football initiatives.
Silversports FC, one of the standout teams in the 2026 Imo State League, has earned recognition for discovering and nurturing young football talents, many of whom are projected to make significant strides in the game.
Speaking at the event, the club’s Chief Executive Officer, Cmrd. Kennedy Onwunali, described Prof. Oparaoji as a passionate advocate of youth empowerment and community development, noting that his leadership experience, vast international network and commitment to the advancement of Mbaise would bring immense value to the club.
According to Onwunali, the appointment is expected to create new opportunities for players through mentorship, strategic partnerships and greater exposure beyond the local football scene.
Responding, Prof. Oparaoji expressed appreciation to the management of Silversports FC for the honour bestowed on him and pledged to leverage his influence and global connections to support the club’s growth. He assured the management and players of his commitment to creating opportunities that would enhance player development and contribute to the advancement of grassroots football in Mbaise, Imo State and Nigeria at large.
Recalling his early days in football, Prof. Oparaoji noted that he was a celebrated goalkeeper during his secondary school years, a background he said inspired his passion for nurturing young talents and supporting grassroots football development.
The ceremony ended with a renewed commitment to build a sustainable platform for identifying, developing and promoting young football talents capable of excelling at both national and international levels.
