The appointment of the immediate past Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Imo State Chapter took effect June 25, 2025.

Rev Eches was elected Chairman of CAN, Imo State in 2020, a position he relinquished this month following a successful hand over to a successor.

In the five years that Rev Eches held away as CAN boss in Imo State, he acquitted himself creditably, discharging his roles in ways that also brought accolades to him from his Superiors working in God’s vineyard, both within and outside.

Before Rev Eches became Chairman of CAN Imo State, he had held other key positions in the organisation such as Secretary; Director of Education, Youth and Women Development; Deputy Publicity Secretary; among others.

A strong member of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA) ministry, Rev Eches holds a Doctorate Degree in Theology, and was at different times, Chaplain of Enyimba Football Club, Aba and Super Eagles of Nigeria

He hails from Isiala Mbano in Imo State.

The Lagos State Football Association is preparing to honor and celebrate former Stationery Stores star player, Biliaminu ‘Billy’ Thanni, with a LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT Award.

At 80 years old, Thanni is the oldest living winner of the President Federation Cup. The newly appointed Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers (NANPF), Enugu State Chapter, Coach Ebere Amaraizu, has emphasized the urgent need to prioritize the welfare and general well-being of football athletes in Nigeria, describing it as fundamental to the growth of the sport.

Speaking shortly after his appointment, Coach Amaraizu stressed that aligning Nigeria’s football system with international best practices requires intentional focus on the rights, welfare, and mental health of professional footballers.

Footballers are the very reason clubs, coaches, and the entire system exist,” Amaraizu said. “They are the geese laying the golden eggs. Their careers are time-bound, and they face constant exposure to injuries and stress, which can result in serious mental health issues.”

He explained that the association under his leadership will vigorously champion the implementation of the Players’ Status Framework, ensuring athletes are not exploited or pushed into toxic playing environments that may affect their mental and emotional health.

We exist to ensure that players are protected, treated with fairness, and given the justice they deserve,” he added. “No professional footballer should be mistreated or forced out of the game due to unfavorable conditions.”

Amaraizu also called for a multidisciplinary and whole-of-society approach involving players, club management, and stakeholders to drive a reorientation that leads to a win-win situation for both employers and athletes.

He commended the NANPF executive body for trusting him with the leadership role and pledged to use the platform to positively influence the future of footballers and the wider football ecosystem in Nigeria.

He described the initiative as part of the Foundation’s ongoing commitment to “promoting community cohesion, resilience, integration, and social inclusion for sustainable development, particularly across South East communities.”

According to Coach Amaraizu, the initiative aligns with the Foundation’s Sports4Development strategy, which also emphasizes health promotion and mental well-being through physical activities and community engagement.

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma has appointed Olympic Gold Medalist, Emmanuel Amuneke as Grand Ambassador for Sports Development in the state, Silvernews.com.ng reports.

The State Governor made the disclosure while presenting his State of the State address to Ndi Imo State at the Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) Chamber.

Uzodimma explained that the 1994 African Footballer of the Year Player has inspired sports development in the state, especially in the establishment of the Imo Dream Team.

He said: “His experience and leadership has inspired the Imo Dream Team. Our support has not stopped at appearances, we have committed resources to sports infrastructure, coaching programs and grassroots scouting, creating a pipeline for future champions.”
