The Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, has unveiled the Prof. M.A. Nze/Oluchi Ekwueme Soccer Academy in the state. Represented by Mr. Gregg Nwadike and Wilson Amaefule, the commissioner assured that the government would continue to support individuals investing in sports development, while also collaborating with agencies to strengthen grassroots sports in the state.

Speaking at the ceremony, Onyeocha commended Oluchi Ekwueme for her vision and commitment to giving back to society through the establishment of the academy. He noted that such initiatives would play a vital role in grooming young talents and creating future opportunities for athletes.

The highlight of the event was a ceremonial match between the Academy team and Harkers FC, which ended in a 1–1 draw. After the game, the CEO of the academy, Oluchi Ekwueme, and the team’s coach, Ekejuba Michael Nwopara, expressed their determination to compete in every available competition with the ultimate goal of nurturing future football stars for Nigeria.

The quality of football by Mavlon FC of Lagos was on display when the team came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Flying Eagles in a thrilling friendly game played at the FIFA goal project, Moshood Abiola stadium in Abuja.

It was a game that truly defined a stiff test game for the Flying Eagles from the blast of the whistle when both sides traded tackles and passed on the pitch with strong intensity and quick transitions depicting an end to end attacking forays, that put both goal keepers in action.

However, Flying Eagles under the able tutelage of Aliyu Zubairu went ahead after the hour mark when Marvellous Freedom slotted the ball into the net, as the team preparing for the FIFA U20 World Cup ended the first half with a goal advantage.

Early in the second half saw the Flying Eagles increased their lead through AbdulBasit Abubakar, who clinically struck the ball into the net.

Flying Eagles were in cruise control it appeared, but enterprising Mavlon players were unfazed, they intensified their efforts, which eventually came when the referee awarded a penalty against Flying Eagles and it was beautifully converted into the net by Sunday Emmanuel to make it 2-1.

The goal conceeded brought out a renewed vigour from the Flying Eagles. The team launched attacking on the defence of Mavlon FC, but met strong resistance in the defence marhalled by Muntari Momoh and his co- defenders.

As time progresses in the game, a quick counter attack by Mavlon that had the football inprint of world class from Ibrahim Muhammed Beji found Abah Emmanuel, who darted into the box of Flying Eagles and unleashed a ferocious shot that hit the roof of the net to make it 2-2 few minutes into the game.

There was no denying the fact that the friendly game had the signature of topnotch football from both teams to the delight of fans that watched it on Saturday morning.

… as Onyeocha lauds Governor Uzodimma

The National Youth Games Zonal Elimination for team games may have come and gone but the victorious memories will never be gone as Imo State came tops from the South-East claiming Gold in both Male and Female category in all featured Sports except in Rugby where they yielded for the silver medal in the Male category.

Some of the Imo contingents on returning from Enugu, venue for the games praised the efforts of the Honorable Commissioner for Sports Development in Imo State, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha for galvanizing support and boosting their morale before their departure to Enugu.

According to Chibuzor, a volleyball player, “The Honorable Commissioner really tried for us. He made sure our journey to Enugu was worthwhile and we have rewarded him with Gold Medals. This is first of its kind”.

Also Obi a football player eulogized the Commissioner for his kind heartedness and described him as a round peg in a round hole in the business of Sports in Imo state. “It has never happened before in Imo State where we go for games and return with only gold Medals. We trained day and night at the Dan Anyiam Stadium all thanks to the Solar Lights provided by our indefatigable Governor, Dist. Senator Hope Uzodimma through our Honorable Commissioner for Sports, he noted.

Welcoming the Imo contingents, the Honorable Commissioner thanked them for making the state proud with their performance at Enugu and tasked them to replicate same feat during the National Youth Games that will be holding in Asaba, Delta State in matter of days.

He appreciated the efforts, large heart and benevolence of His Excellency, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma who he described as a Sports Ambassador who have revolutionalized Sports in the State. “The Sports loving Governor has yet again shown that sports must thrive in our state through continued support and encouragement, I doff my Cap for him”.

It will be recalled that 5 states of the South-East participated in the games with Imo State sweeping Gold Medals in Abula, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Handball, Hockey, Beach Volleyball and Volleyball except for Rugby (Male category) where they settled for the silver medal.

The NPFL 2025/2026 season’s opener between reigning champions, Remo Stars and Rivers United ended in a stalemate.

The game which was decided at the temporary home ground of Remo Stars at the MKO Sports Arena in Abeokuta ended one apiece with goals from Victor Mbaoma for the host and Aniekeme Okon for the visitors.

A breakdown of the matches will be played simultaneously on Sunday, August 24, 2025 at various venues by 4pm local time.

The matches are: Abia Warriors vs Kano Pillars in Umuahia; Wikki Tourist vs Plateau United in Bauchi; Katsina United vs Warri Wolves in Katsina; Rangers International vs Kun Kalifat in Enugu; Kwara United vs Ikorodu City in Ilorin; Shooting Stars vs Bayelsa United in Ibadan

Others are; Barau vs Enyimba International in Kano; Niger Tornadoes vs Nasarawa United in TBA and El-Kanemi Warriors vs Bendel Insurance in Maiduguri.

Head Coach Eric Sekou Chelle has selected team captain William Ekong, first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, defenders Olaoluwa Aina and Calvin Bassey, midfielders Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, and forwards Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Simon Moses in a provisional list of 31 for next month’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against Rwanda and South Africa.

There are also youthful goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt, defenders Bright Osayi-Samuel and Bruno Onyemaechi, midfielders Raphael Onyedika, Frank Onyeka and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and forwards Sadiq Umar and Nathan Tella.

Young defender Benjamin Fredericks, rearguard mates Felix Agu and Igoh Ogbu, midfielder Christantus Uche and forward Cyriel Dessers, who impressed at the 2025 Unity Cup Tournament that Nigeria won in London in the summer, are also invited, with returns for goalkeeper Adeleye Adebayo, defender Chidozie Awaziem and forward Terem Moffi.

Fourth-placed Nigeria take on Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium on Saturday, 6th September in a Matchday 7 encounter, before flying to Bloemfontein to confront South Africa in a potentially-explosive Matchday 8 encounter on Tuesday, 9th September.

Nigeria’s camp for the two crucial matches will open in Uyo on Monday, 1st September.

Abia Warriors Football Club have declared their readiness for the upcoming Nigeria Premier Football League season as well as their debut appearance on the continental stage. Ojong overpowered Odey Ogrinya with a composed yet dominant display, winning 6-4, 6-1 in straight sets to claim the coveted gold medal. The Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals (FMMP) has congratulated Comrade Ezenwa Adiuku on his election as the South East Zonal Vice President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ).

In a statement signed by its President, Comrade Patrick Mgbaja, and Secretary, Comrade Goddy Chuks Anyanwu, the group described Adiuku’s victory as “a proof of his sterling leadership qualities” and expressed confidence in his ability to take the union to greater heights.

FMMP noted that Adiuku, a seasoned journalist and unionist, has remained a strong advocate for press freedom, welfare of journalists, and professional ethics, making his emergence a source of pride for the Mbaise community and Imo State.

The body prayed for God’s guidance for the new NUJ Zonal Vice President as he takes up his new responsibility.
