Top Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, clubs are seeking the services of Darlintin Ovunda after he confirmed his exit from Heartland FC.

Ovunda, who was part of the set-up with the Naze Millionaires in the 2023/2024 NPFL season confirmed on his Twitter handle that his contract has expired.

“My time at Heartland FC has come to an end. Thank you to everyone at the club for making my time memorable. We move onto the next club for a new chapter. I am open to a new challenge elsewhere.”

According to reports, top sides in the league and outside the country are jostling for the shot-stopper who has proven to be a good goalkeeper.

The SKE FC of Port Harcourt prodigy said he is open to new challenge following the relegation of Heartland FC to the NNL.

Recall that Ovunda, a league champion with Rivers United, was previously with Shooting Stars Club of Ibadan before he moved to Heartland during the mid-season in the just concluded season.

The Players Board of the Nigeria Players Union, the National Association of Nigeria Professional Footballers, NANPF, is set to hold its Congress.

According to its Executive Secretary, Comrade Austin Popo on behalf of the Chairman, the congress would hold early next month, precisely on the first of August 2024, before the commencement of the 2024/2025 football season.

“The venue of the Congress will be made available as arrangements are concluded

“The Congress is composed by all the Club Captains in the NPFL, NNL NWFL and the Union states administrve secretaries and Directors. The Congress will amongst other business of the day ratify the statutes of the union as, amended in ensuring that the current players are placed in the heart of the union activities and decisions making process in tune with global best practices in ensuring the Union take its proper place in the scheme of things within the football ecosystem in Nigeria.

“The Congress will also discuss the process and modalities of the implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) between the players as represented by their Union and their Employers, Organisers and regulators of their trade. The Congress will also provide the unique opportunity for some of the Union potential Pension Fund Administrators and the NHIS to interact and engage the players on potential areas of partnership and collaboration on the establishment of the proposed Players contributory pension scheme and Health insurance scheme.

“The Congress will close with the Union Fund Raising Solidarity match that will feature members of the Congress.”

The maiden edition of the Nigeria Ex-Internationals Cup 2024, organised by Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), was successfully concluded Sunday, as it ended in a blaze of glory at the prestigious Mobolaji Johnson Arena.

In the final match, FC Nwosu defeated FC Ekpo, in a nail-biting penalty kicks of 6-5 after playing out a goalless 90 minutes in regulation time, to emerge winners of the giant trophy and the princely sum of N2 million.

Once again, like he did in the quater-finals and semi-finals respectively, goalkeeper Samuel Oriola of FC Nwosu, was the hero for his side as he saved two penalty kicks to gift his team the trophy.

And in its unique and refreshing style, the organisers made a resounding and unprecedented statement by ensuring that the winners received their prize monies of N2m, N1m, N500,000 and N250,000, for the first to the fourth placed teams respectively, just few hours after the conclusion of the games, to the delight of the winners, who were pleasantly surprised, as they expressed untold gratitude and appreciation to the organisers.

An elated LSFA boss, Hajji Gafar Olawale Liameed, was thankful to God and everyone who made the tournament a success. Gafar remarked gleefully, that the tournament has set an enviable benchmark for football organisation in the country, which is synonymous with the Lagos State, as the centre of excellence.

Defending champions, Abraysports FC will kick start their AMAPRO Football Championship title defense against debutant WonderXchange Football Club from Ondo State on Monday.

The championship that will feature 16 teams have been divided into four groups of four teams each.

In a fixtures released by the organizers after the draws, Abraysports who defeated Kwara Football Academy, KFA in last year’s final will get the championship underway at the Pitch A of KFA by 8am

Simultaneously, regular participants of the championship, Gateway FA from Ekiti State and Laycon FA from Offa will take to tango at the Pitch B by 8am.

Also on Monday by 10am, House of Prayer Football Academy will engage NNL All Stars at Pitch A while Da Faria Sporting Club will be taking on Ibadan City SC.

Actions continue by 2pm on the opening day at both pitches A and B of KFA when AMAPRO SSA will battle for match points against Kasam FA as Taiwo Awoniyi’s Unicorn FC will be facing Dickalo FA.

Matchday One actions will be concluded with two games as NPFL All Stars will be taking on HMK FC club Osun State at Pitch A while Kwara Football Academy, KFA will Terwoh Sporting Club from Kaduna State at Pitch B.

High flying FC Nwosu reached the Nigeria Ex-Internationals Cup final after a nailbiting 6-5 penalty shootout win over FC Agbai on Friday.

After an enthralling tie at the Legacy Pitch, goalkeeper Samuel Oriola proved decisive with three saves for the Henry Nwosu mentored side in the shoot-out.

Etiti Solomon’s improvised finish put FC Agbai ahead on 50 minutes, but FC Nwosu levelled afterwards as striker Samson Akinyoola forced goalkeeper Obaze Miracle to an error as the net minder mistakenly put the ball into his own goal post.

Kehinde Ibrahim scored the winning spot-kick after the game had finished 1-1 following 90 minutes of football in Friday’s semi-final.

Sixteen kicks were needed in the penalty shoot-out and FC Nwosu advanced to face FC Ekpo at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday.

It would be recalled that the legendary Nwosu was the youngest member of the Green Eagles’ (now Super Eagles) victorious 1980 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) squad, and scored the only goal for Nigeria at the 1980 Olympics. He also played in the 1982, 1984 and 1988 AFCON tournaments, finishing runners up in the latter two. He had 60 caps for the Nigeria senior national team.

Nwosu was an assistant for former Super Eagles teammate Samson Siasia at the 2008 Beijing Olympics where Nigeria won the silver medal. He was an assistant to Festus Onigbinde who took the Super Eagles to 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan. He also managed the Golden Eaglets, Union Bank and Gateway United in the past.

Meanwhile, FC Ekpo proved too strong for FC Agali as the former picked a 2-0 victory in the second semi-final.

Striker Deji Alo slotted the ball past goalkeeper Gbadamosi Sulaimon for the opener on the half hour mark.

Richard Soaje put the game beyond FC Agali with another goal for the Friday Ekpo tutored outfit.

Dangerman Hassan Aliu tried to reduce the deficit but his effort struck the woodwork.

Diminutive Ekpo featured for clubs like Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland), Mobil Pegasus (defunct), Abiola Babes (defunct), Leventis United (defunct) and Shell FC of Gabon during his playing days.

Ekpo was a member of the Iwuanyanwu Nationale team that lost to Algerian side Entente de Setif, in the 1988 final of the African Cup of Champions Clubs now known as the CAF Champions League.

He represented Nigeria at the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal and scored the first goal in the 2-1 win against Cameroon in the third place match.

The government and relevant sports stakeholders have been urged to revive school sports competitions, particularly the national football tournaments, to discover new talents.

The Director of Blitzik Sports Initiative, Mr. Isaac Afolabi, emphasized this need while donating sports items to Oyemekun Grammar School in Akure.
The donation was a collaboration between Blitzik Sports and the Community Sports and Education Development Initiative (CSED).

Mr. Afolabi, who also serves as the Vice Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ondo State chapter, and a sports journalist and analyst with the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Positive 102.5 FM Akure, reminisced about the excitement of participating in national football tournaments such as the Shell Cup, Principals Cup, and Mobil Track and Field Games. He called for the revival of these competitions.

Speaking virtually about the initiative, the Director of CSED, Mr. Cornelius Ehimiaghe, stated that the gesture aimed to encourage schools to combine sports with education.
Ehimiaghe dedicated the initiative to his late father, Mr. Israel Menson Ehimiaghe, who was a goalkeeper for Oyemekun Grammar School in the 1950s.

In response, the Principal of Oyemekun Grammar School, Mr. Ogunleye Okeowo, represented by the Vice-Principal, Mr. Yinka Bode, appreciated the donation, stressing that the school would make good use of the items.

Additionally, the school’s sports Master and Mistress, Mr. Olayemi Jibola and Mrs. Ademola Adedoyin, commended Blitzik and CSED for the timely donation.

Speaking on behalf of the excited students, the school’s football captain, Master Alabi Nicolas, expressed gratitude for the gift and assured its maintenance.

The items donated included sets of new jerseys, balls, socks, and training cones.

The hardworking President and Proprietor of Edel FC of Anambra, Chief Jude Edeh has paid a visit to Ljungkile SK of Sweden to solidify the footballing relationship and tie with Edel FC of Anambra.

According to the club, the visit was aimed at reaching out to its former players, Arinze Anya Kingsley and Harrison Ofonime, who are on loan at Ljungkile SK of Sweden.

“Our dedicated CEO made the working visit from his base in Holland. He saw the league game between Ljungkile SK and BK Olympic which our two boys participated in.

“Chief Edeh was accompanied by Super agent, Prince Ikpe Ekong, who brokered the deal between the two clubs.

“After the game, he gave words of encouragement to the boys and charged to be committed and focused on their careers.”
