Five days of keenly contested events of the 2nd edition of the Niger Delta Games (NDG) ended with funfair Thursday, February 26 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City, Edo State.

The host state for the first time in a long while topped the medals of any national sports fiesta with 52 gold medals.

But that was not the talking point as delegates headed back to their respective states. The discussion was more about the athletics events, most especially the final day of the contest.

From day one when the 100m was decided to the last day of relay spectacle, it was fireworks all through and justifiably so, because the Niger Delta area is a forest of athletics talents, and over the years has produced some of Nigeria’s best in local and international track and field contests.

Delta State dominated the competition in Benin City in the face of the strong challenge from Edo, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

Delta State athletes won 13 gold medals mostly from the sprints and relays, Edo had its success in the field events, while Akwa Ibom and Cross River shared between themselves the medals of middle and long distance races.

“Nobody can take it from Delta State in athletics, they have a very good structure that produces quality athletes every year,” said Mutiu Oluwa, Edo State Athletics coach.

“If other states like Edo can do what they are doing then it is going to be a total showdown in future Niger Delta Games,” he declared.

Just before the closing ceremony Delta State left no one in doubt that they are untouchable by winning three out of the four relay gold medals at stake.

It was Akwa Ibom State that by winning the men’s 4x400m stopped Delta State from a clean sweep on the final day.

“The athletes gave it every thing that they had, because everyone wanted to make a statement.

“This is good for Nigeria athletics. Looking at the quality of the contest and running talents, the competition was very encouraging.

“This is just the start and I believe with many more to come, this country can boast of many athletes in the near future,” said former Nigeria former sprint champion Seun Ogunkoya.

Some of the star athletes that kept the spectators spellbound include Ejiro Peters who won a sprint double in the women’s 100m and 200m. She also won gold in the 4x100m.

Osama Chibueze also repeated the same for Delta State by winning a sprint double and the 4x100m.

In the 400m David Udoh of Cross River State. crashed into Delta’s party, by taking the men’s 400m, and he also contributed to Cross River State taking the men’s 4x400m gold. Treasure Okereke had earlier won the women’s gold and also helped Delta State to win the women’s 4x400m.

Akwa Ibom’s Hephzibah Okon was quite a sensation in the women’s 800m but her quest for a double was checkmated by Cross River’s Godsmind Eteng in the 1500m.

In the men’s Emmanuel Asuquo won it. Treasure Omosivwe was practically competing with herself in the women’s high jump as she was able to match her personal best of 1.75m to win the gold for Edo State.

“What we have seen here at the Niger Delta Games is quite encouraging, Nigeria, most especially the Niger Delta region is blessed with athletics talents,” said Mrs Joyce Bozimo, organiser of the Warri Effurun Peace Marathon.

“Our only wish is that there should be a follow up on these athletes.

“We can have a camp like we used to have in Afuze where they could be trained, mentored and conditioned to become world champions.”

She also praised the organisation of the events, which according to her was excellent.

Chairman of the organising committee Sir Itiako Ikpokpo who is also Delta State Athletics Association chairman, was on hand to coordinate with the technical committee led by Enefiok Odo-Obong to ensure a smooth running of the Athletics events.

Ikpokpo said that the Games Scouting and Mentorship Committee have been monitoring the events at all the venues and are expected to come up with recommendations on the next steps. He however, encouraged the states to also ensure that athletes found to have potentials are provided with requisite support to blossom.

“All said, Dunamis-Icon Limited and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) do not own these athletes and we don’t intend to. We have only provided a platform for the athletes to showcase their talents and it is the states and the Federal agency that has the responsibility to make them national and international champions”, Ikpokpo said at a media conference before the games closed.

The proprietary rights to Niger Delta Games is owned by Dunamis-Icon Limited and sponsored by the NDDC.

Football has been identified as a strategic instrument for unity, youth empowerment and sustainable regional development in Northwest Nigeria.

A critical stakeholder of the Rangers International F.C. Foundation, Abubakar Magaji Yabo (Sarkin Yamma Yabo), said the sport remains one of the most effective platforms for engaging young people positively and fostering peace across diverse communities.

Yabo explained that the Rangers International F.C. Foundation is positioned to expand its impact beyond competitive football by driving community-based programmes such as grassroots tournaments, school partnerships, coaching clinics and mentorship sessions.

He emphasized the need for collaboration among local authorities, private sector partners and community leaders to build sustainable sports structures capable of benefiting future generations.

The stakeholder also underscored the importance of infrastructure development, including functional training facilities, youth academies and community football hubs, noting that such investments would not only provide safe spaces for development but also stimulate economic activities within host communities.

Heartland Football Club has received with deep shock and profound sadness the news of the passing of our former Protocol Officer and Licensing Officer, Mr. Tonnex Chukwu.

Mr. Chukwu was recently involved in a road crash, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism, and unwavering passion for sports. His sudden departure is a painful loss not only to Heartland FC but to the entire Nigerian football family.

A seasoned sports journalist and former Media Officer of Enyimba FC, Mr. Chukwu served Heartland FC with distinction. During his time with the Naze Millionaires, he brought immense experience, structure, and commitment to his roles, contributing significantly to the administrative and operational growth of the club.

Reacting to the sad development, Heartland FC Technical Manager, Emmanuel Amuneke, expressed his shock and sorrow over the loss.

“I am deeply shocked by the news of Tonnex Chukwu’s death. He was a thorough professional whose experience and insight were invaluable to Heartland FC. His passion for the game and dedication to duty stood him out. This is a painful loss, and he will be greatly missed,” Amuneke said.

Chief Emmanuel Ogbonna, Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots mobilization following his courtesy visit to the Magic Movement in Nguruwenkwo community.

Speaking during the engagement, Ogbonna stressed the need for sustained unity and effective communication of the achievements of Mr. President to the grassroots.

He noted that the Renewed Hope Ambassadors remain dedicated to promoting good governance and strengthening political structures within the local government area.

“The essence of our movement is to ensure that the people at the grassroots are well informed about the policies and programmes of the administration and to consolidate support ahead of future political activities,” he said.

In his remarks, the leader of the Magic Movement, Hon. Frank Uche, declared the group’s readiness to support the re-election of President Bola Tinubu in 2027. He also pledged the movement’s full backing for the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Aboh Mbaise.

Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, Hon. Etta Lawrence, has expressed satisfaction with the state’s performance at the just concluded Niger Delta Sports Festival in Benin City, Edo State, where Cross River finished sixth overall on the medals table.

The state clinched a total of nine gold, seven silver and 22 bronze medals, a performance Etta Lawrence described as encouraging considering the short preparation period and the rebuilding process currently ongoing in the state’s sports sector.

Etta Lawrence reiterated that when he assumed office, the commission had to begin afresh by scouting for talents across the local government areas due to the absence of a ready pool of competitive athletes.

“We inherited virtually nothing in terms of athletes prepared for major competitions. We had to go back to the grassroots, mobilise our coaches and identify young talents from across the state,” he said.

According to him, the athletes were camped for about one month before the festival, a period he said was instrumental in building team cohesion and sharpening their skills.

He noted that beyond the medal haul, the exposure gained by the young athletes—many of whom were travelling outside the state for the first time—was a significant achievement for the commission.

Lawrence expressed optimism that with sustained grassroots development and continued support from stakeholders, Cross River would soon return to its glorious days in Nigerian sports.

The stage is set for the 3rd National Para Games, Nigeria’s largest and most prestigious para sports event, scheduled to hold from March 26 to April 3, 2026, in Abuja.

For nine thrilling days, the nation’s capital will host more than 3,000 athletes representing all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, competing across 15 different sports in a celebration of resilience, excellence, and inclusion. Champions will rise. Records will fall. History will be made.

Organized by the National Sports Commission, the Games continue to serve as a powerful platform for talent discovery, national unity, and the advancement of para sports in Nigeria. Since its inception, the National Para Games has grown into a defining event on the country’s sporting calendar, showcasing the extraordinary abilities of athletes living with disabilities and reinforcing Nigeria’s commitment to inclusivity in sports.

The 2026 edition promises to surpass previous outings in scale, organization, and competitive intensity. With participation from every state of the federation and the FCT, the Games will highlight the depth of talent spread across the country and provide a pathway for athletes to progress to continental and global competitions.

In a major boost to the successful hosting of the event, the National Youth Service Corps has partnered with the National Sports Commission by releasing its Orientation Camp in Kubwa, Abuja, to serve as the official Games Village. The facility will house athletes and officials throughout the duration of the Games, ensuring a conducive, secure, and community-focused environment.

This collaboration underscores a shared national vision to empower young Nigerians and promote social integration through sports. It also reflects a growing inter-agency commitment to supporting para athletes and strengthening Nigeria’s sports ecosystem.

Paul Bassey, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports and former General Manager of Akwa United F.C., has lauded the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dunamis Icon for their collaboration, which he said has revitalised sports development across the Niger Delta region.

Speaking at the close of the second edition of the Niger Delta Sports Festival in Benin City, Edo State, Bassey expressed satisfaction with Akwa Ibom’s performance at the Games.

The state finished fourth overall on the medals table with 16 gold, 22 silver and 22 bronze medals, amassing a total of 55 medals in what he described as a strong outing for the delegation.

According to him, the reward programme instituted by the Akwa Ibom State Government played a pivotal role in motivating the athletes to deliver podium finishes.

“Our objective is not just to host or win medals, but to discover talents that will take the world by storm in the coming years,” Bassey stated.

He cited the example of the 800 metres gold medallist who had finished last at the previous edition in Uyo but rebounded to claim top honours in Benin City, describing the feat as evidence of resilience and the impact of sustained encouragement.

Bassey disclosed that the state government approved ₦500,000 for each gold medallist, alongside other incentives for outstanding performers.

He further recounted his interaction with one of the athletes who received ₦2 million in motivational incentives last December and decided to share the reward with family members, a gesture he said underscores the positive impact of the policy.

The commissioner commended Dunamis Icon for conceptualising the NDDC Games initiative and praised the NDDC for sponsoring what he called a landmark competition that is reshaping the sporting landscape of the Niger Delta and Nigeria at large.

Barau Football Club has reaffirmed its strong relationship with the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kano State chapter, pledging continued collaboration for the development of sports.

The club’s General Manager, Dominic Iorfa, made this known during a press conference held on Saturday in Kano, following a misunderstanding between the club’s Technical Adviser, Eugene Agagbe, and journalist Aminu Halilu Tudun Wada.

Iorfa dismissed reports circulating that the club was not working harmoniously with the Association, describing such claims as false and misleading.

During the meeting, Iorfa also announced the appointment of Aminu Halilu Tudun Wada to work closely with Technical Adviser Eugene Agagbe in promoting the coach activities.

Speaking at the event, Coach Eugene Agagbe described Aminu Tudun Wada as a professional journalist and clarified that he never intended to intimidate him in the course of his duties, describing the incident as a misunderstanding.

The press conference and interactive sessions were attended by several journalists and officials of Barau FC.
