Obituary: Leonard Soronnadi Nkwocha Dies at 81

The football community in Imo State and Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of Late Special Senior Apostle Leonard Soronnadi Nkwocha, popularly known as “Attila the Hun,” who passed away at the age of 81.

Nkwocha, who lived from 1945 to 2026, was a respected figure whose life was marked by service to football, the Church, family and humanity.

He was associated with the historic development of football in Imo State and Nigeria, and his contribution to the growth of the sport remains part of the memories of those who knew and worked with him.

Beyond football, Nkwocha devoted himself to his faith, family and community. He was a Special Senior Apostle of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, where he was regarded as a man whose life was a blessing to his family, the Church and humanity.

His death has created a significant void among his family, friends, associates and members of the football community who will remember him for his dedication, leadership and service.

According to the burial arrangements released by his family, a service of songs will be held on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

On Friday, August 14, his body is expected to leave Ogwusivo Mortuary at 7:30 a.m. A brief football match will be held at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, at 9:30 a.m., before the remains proceed to his home in Umuokoro Obakwu, Ulo, Owerri North.

His body will thereafter lie in state at his compound, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. conducted by the Eternal Sacred Order of the Cherubim and Seraphim, Owerri Province. Interment will follow immediately at his compound.

Leonard Soronnadi Nkwocha may have taken his final bow, but his contributions to football, the Church, his family and society will continue to be remembered by those whose lives he touched.
