Newly elected players’ representative on the board of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), Dr Lucky Abubakar Aliyu, has pledged to prioritise grassroots development and work towards restoring the fortunes of Nigerian basketball in the next four years.

Aliyu, who expressed excitement following his election at Bentley Hotel, Abuja, said the emergence of the new board offered an opportunity to rebuild the game and create a better future for young players across the country.

Speaking after the election, the players’ representative assured basketball stakeholders that the new board would comprise individuals committed to the growth and development of the sport.

“I know I’m very, very excited. I’m excited for the game of basketball. I’m excited for these kids that are going to see us on board, and I assure you that the NBBF will have a wonderful board. We will have people that will love the game of basketball. The game of basketball will come alive now,” he said.

Aliyu also described the players’ unanimous support during the election as a demonstration of confidence, noting that their collective voice would strengthen their representation on the federation’s board.

These players spoke with one voice, 28 over 28. What does that mean? It means confidence,” he stated.

He added that the new board would work together to advance the interests of basketball and ensure that players remained an important part of the federation’s development agenda.

On expectations for the next four years, Aliyu identified grassroots development and the involvement of young talents as key areas requiring attention, stressing the need to rebuild the game from the foundation.

We need to develop from the grassroots, get the skaters involved so that the national team will come back,” he said.

The newly elected representative expressed optimism about the future of Nigerian basketball, assuring stakeholders that the new board had plans to move the sport forward.

“So don’t worry, we have everything in stock for basketball,” Aliyu added.
