The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee as part of efforts to improve road infrastructure safety and reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities across Nigeria.
The Corps Marshal of FRSC, Shehu Mohammed, while inaugurating the committee at the Corps Marshal’s Conference Hall, FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja, described the development as a major milestone in Nigeria’s journey towards building safer roads and achieving global road safety targets.
Mohammed said road traffic crashes remain a major public health and development challenge globally, stressing that proactive road infrastructure assessment and management were critical to protecting lives and improving safety for all categories of road users.
He explained that the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP), established by FRSC in partnership with International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP), would provide a systematic approach to assessing road safety standards, identifying high-risk locations and implementing solutions to improve road conditions.
The Corps Marshal stated that the programme was built around three strategic pillars: strengthening local partnerships, promoting international collaboration and ensuring the achievement of Three-Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads.
He recalled that Nigeria’s efforts towards institutionalising the programme started with the inauguration of the Stakeholders Committee in February 2021 and received further boost following the signing of the National Licence Agreement between FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025.
According to him, the newly inaugurated Steering Committee would provide strategic direction, coordination and leadership to ensure the successful implementation of NigeriaRAP.
The committee comprises representatives from major stakeholders in the public and private sectors, including the Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), Green Light Initiative, KRSD Foundation and other strategic partners.
While appreciating members of the committee for accepting the responsibility, Mohammed charged them to remain committed, proactive and focused on achieving the objectives of NigeriaRAP.
He expressed confidence that through collective efforts, stronger partnerships and sustained investment in safer road infrastructure, the programme would significantly contribute to reducing road traffic fatalities and creating a safer transport environment for Nigerians.
In a statement signed by Osondu Ohaeri, FNIPR, FCAI, Deputy Corps Commander and Corps Public Education Officer, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Headquarters, Abuja, the Corps reiterated its commitment to strategic partnerships and evidence-based road safety management aimed at reducing crashes and fatalities on Nigerian roads.
The statement further noted that the NigeriaRAP Steering Committee was expected to provide the needed leadership and coordination to ensure the effective implementation of the programme while promoting safer road infrastructure across the country.
