Efugh Urges Heartland to Recapture Glorious Past, Commends Amunike’s Leadership

By Wakawaka Sports

Former Heartland FC captain and member of the club’s current technical set-up, Chinedu Efugh, has called for a revival of the winning mentality that defined the Owerri side’s glorious years as the club prepares for the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season.

Efugh, who captained the Naze Millionaires during their remarkable 2011/2012 era, recalled how the club won the FA Cup back-to-back and three other trophies, recording an impressive haul of five titles in two years.

Reflecting on the historic achievement, Efugh described the period as one built on hard work, determination and collective commitment.

It was a thing of joy. It wasn’t easy. It was hard work and determination,” he recalled.

The former captain called on members of his former playing generation to take over the responsibility of restoring Heartland’s winning tradition, urging them to bring back the unity, commitment and team spirit that characterised their successful era.

Efugh also commended the club’s Technical Manager, Coach Emmanuel Amunike, for his sacrifices, dedication and commitment to the growth and development of Heartland.

He expressed confidence that with Amunike’s leadership, collective determination and the right team spirit, the club could make the 2026/2027 NNL season a successful one.

The former captain, who now contributes to the club’s technical structure, also appealed to Heartland supporters across the world to continue praying for the team and believing in its ambition.

Let’s just pray for us and keep believing. We’re going to make them proud,” he assured.

Heartland’s immediate ambition is to secure a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with the club hoping to draw inspiration from its glorious past as it begins another journey towards top-flight football.
