Management and staff of Coal City Blazers Basketball Club have expressed delight over the outstanding performances of the club’s players, Joshua Ogbonna and Timothy Onyekachi, who are representing Nigeria at the ongoing FIBA AfroBasket U-18 Qualifiers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The duo, who featured for Coal City Blazers during the club’s maiden campaign in the Nigeria Basketball Premier League, have continued to impress on the continental stage, with Joshua Ogbonna earning the Man of the Match award in one of Nigeria’s games.
Head coach of the club, Coach Chiedozi Nwoye, praised the players for their commitment and quality, saying their performances have shown they possess the talent and determination to succeed at the highest level of the game.
The club’s co-owner and South-East representative on the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) Board, Chief Ugo Udezue, described the players’ achievements as a proud moment for the club and the South-East region.
Udezue said the success of the players reflects the club’s commitment to youth development, adding that their achievements have strengthened the club’s resolve to invest more in grassroots basketball across the region.
Coal City Blazers made history as the first basketball club from South-East Nigeria to compete in the Nigeria Basketball Premier League’s Atlantic Conference, finishing sixth in its debut season.
The club believes the performances of Joshua Ogbonna and Timothy Onyekachi at the FIBA AfroBasket U-18 Qualifiers have further highlighted the immense basketball potential in the South-East and will inspire more young athletes to pursue excellence while representing Nigeria with pride.
