Heartland FC of Owerri will begin their campaign in the 2026/2027 Nigeria National League (NNL) season when they host Crown FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri, on Sunday, November 1.

The Owerri-based side will be banking on the experience of their Technical Director, Emmanuel Amunike, as they seek a strong start to their campaign and pursue a return to the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

Amunike, a former African Footballer of the Year and one of Nigeria’s most celebrated football exports, brings a wealth of experience from his playing and coaching career to Heartland’s technical department.

The former Zamalek of Egypt player also featured for FC Barcelona and FC Porto during his illustrious playing career. He remains the last African-based player to win the African Footballer of the Year award, having claimed the honour in 1994.

After hanging up his boots, Amunike ventured into coaching and made his mark by leading Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets to victory at the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile.

He also coached Tanzania’s senior national team, guiding the Taifa Stars to qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, their first appearance at the continental tournament in 39 years.

His wealth of experience is expected to be valuable to Heartland as the club seeks to rebuild and regain its place among Nigeria’s elite football teams.

Sunday’s encounter against Crown FC, scheduled for 4 p.m. at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, will provide the Naze Millionaires with their first opportunity to translate their preparations into a positive result.

With the Nigeria National League serving as the pathway to promotion to the NPFL, Heartland will be keen to make their home advantage count in front of their supporters.

The club’s ambition is reflected in its campaign slogan,
One Team, One Dream, Heartland!”, as the players, technical crew and supporters look forward to a successful season.

For Amunike, his role as Technical Director will be crucial in providing technical direction and helping to establish the standards required for the club to achieve its objectives.

Heartland supporters will be hoping that the presence of the former Nigerian international in the technical department will contribute to a successful campaign as the Owerri side begins its journey back to the top flight.
