The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced an immediate, coordinated intervention with the Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Works to restore free flow of traffic and road sanity along the affected sections of the Bida–Kutigi corridor in Niger State, following a directive from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently address the situation and alleviate the hardship being experienced by motorists and other road users.
The intervention followed a high-level meeting between the Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed mni, the Honourable Minister of State for Works, Bello Muhammad Goronyo, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Transport and Mobility, Prince Ademola Adetokunbo, and the National President of the National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), Alhaji Yusuf Lawal. The meeting focused on immediate and practical measures to complement the sustained traffic management efforts of FRSC personnel already deployed along the affected routes.
On the strength of the foregoing, the Corps wishes to assure motorists, transport operators, commuters and residents who have been caught up in the prolonged gridlock that the situation is receiving urgent attention at the highest level. The objective is clear: to reopen the affected routes, restore normal traffic movement, reduce the hardship on road users and prevent further disruption to economic activities along the corridor.
The major areas of concern include the Wuya Bridge between Kutigi and Bida, where traffic congestion is regularly experienced, particularly on Wednesdays due to increased vehicular activity associated with the weekly market. In response, FRSC Commands in Bida and Kutigi have consistently deployed personnel every Wednesday to manage traffic and facilitate seamless movement.
More critically, sections of the Bida–Badeggi–Agaie road have reportedly remained blocked in both directions for about 15 days, while another major obstruction has affected the Maje–Diko Junction axis, in front of the Suleja NNPC Depot, also for approximately 15 days. These prolonged obstructions have significantly affected motorists, transport operators and the movement of goods and passengers.
The Corps Marshal has directed that FRSC personnel continue to maintain strategic presence and effective traffic management along the affected corridors while the intervention by the Presidency and the Federal Ministry of Works addresses the underlying road obstructions and restores the affected routes to normal use.
Meanwhil, FRSC acknowledges the frustration, delays and economic losses being experienced by motorists and other road users and appeals for patience and cooperation as the coordinated intervention takes effect. Motorists are particularly urged to remain calm, obey traffic control instructions, avoid reckless overtaking and other actions capable of worsening the congestion, and cooperate with personnel working to restore order.
The Corps further assures the public that the safety, mobility and welfare of road users remain paramount and that every necessary institutional effort is being mobilised to ensure that the affected corridors are brought back to normal operation as urgently as possible. For motorists trapped in the gridlock, help is now on the way. The intervention is immediate, coordinated and focused on getting the roads moving again.
