Rangers International F.C. on Sunday shattered the hopes of football fans in Rivers State after clinching a dramatic Nigeria Premier Football League title in one of the most thrilling endings in recent league history.
The Flying Antelopes secured the championship for the ninth time despite intense pressure from title rivals Rivers United F.C., who had done their part with a convincing 3-0 victory over Katsina United F.C. at the packed Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium.
With excitement building in Port Harcourt, reports filtered into the stadium that Ikorodu City F.C. had equalized against Rangers, sparking massive celebrations among Rivers United supporters and officials who believed the title race had swung in their favour.
silvernews.com.ng reported that fans were seen jubilating across the stadium, singing and waving flags as expectations of a historic triumph grew stronger. The Rivers United management had also mobilised heavily for the crucial fixture, with thousands of supporters turning out in anticipation of celebrating the league crown.
However, the celebrations were cut short after confirmation emerged that the report was false. Rangers had maintained their lead and eventually held on for a dramatic 2-1 victory to silence the home crowd and secure the NPFL title.
The result further cemented Rangers’ status as one of Nigeria’s most successful football clubs, with the Enugu side once again demonstrating resilience and championship pedigree on the biggest stage.
