Imo state commissioner of Sports Hon Evaristus Obinna Onyeocha (Onowu) has highlighted some progress in sports under the current administration.
He disclosed these in an interactive session with members of the sports writers association of Nigeria (SWAN) Imo state chapter in his office at the state Secretariat Port Harcourt road Owerri.
The commissioner stated that the recent reception by the governor of Imo state of the 7 Super Falcons players from the state was a testimony to show that the state may soon take back her lost glory as the home for sports in the country.
He also said that 2 out of the players of the Female basketball National team (D’ TIGRESS) are from Imo state with one of them as the team captain.
He further explained that at the Youth Games elimination last year held in Enugu,the state youth team won 9 gold medals out of the 14 available medals with the hope to achieve same or more in the forth coming National Youth Games at Asaba from August 2025 .
Onyeocha also said to that the Heartland queens will soon resume training in preparation for the new season and plans are on to engage new players that will help beef up the Squad.
He also said that the Heartland queens camp has been renovated and wearing a new look conducive for the team.
The sports commissioner that the Heartland feeders team are doing well in the current la liga tournament, as well as the state U19 team while expressing his joy over the new face of the Dan Anyiam stadium with street lights at every nook and cranny of the stadium.
