IMO STATE FLAGS OFF 2025 OLYMPIC DAY CELEBRATION

The Imo State Government has officially flagged off the 2025 Olympic Day celebration with a strong reaffirmation of its commitment to sports development and the enduring values of the Olympic spirit.

The ceremony, held in Owerri, was graced by athletes, sports stakeholders, and enthusiasts from across the state. Speaking on behalf of the Executive Governor of Imo State, His Excellency Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma, the Hon. Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, delivered the governor’s goodwill message, described as one of warmth and encouragement.

In the message, Governor Uzodimma expressed delight in joining the global community to commemorate this year’s Olympic Day, while emphasizing the historical roots of the Olympic Movement, founded in 1894 by Pierre De Coubertin to foster global sportsmanship, peace, and unity.

“The Olympic Day is a global celebration that inspires people around the world to actively participate in sports and embrace the values of excellence, friendship, and respect,” the message read.

Governor Uzodimma, through Hon. Onyeocha, noted the unique power of sports to unite communities and build bridges across cultures. “This year’s event reminds us that sports build bridges, bring people together in peace and solidarity, and inspire us to be the best version of ourselves. It promotes health, friendship, and community,” he added.

Reiterating the commitment of the Shared Prosperity Government to creating a sports-friendly environment, the governor pledged continued support for grassroots sports and the development of athletes across Imo State.

“We will continue to support sports and athletes across Imo State. You, the athletes and sports lovers, owe Imo State a great deal by striving to win laurels and bring pride to our dear state,” the statement continued.

The ceremony reached its climax as Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, on behalf of the governor, officially declared the 2025 Olympic Day celebration open.

“On this special day, let us celebrate the joy that only sports can bring. It is my singular honor and privilege, on behalf of His Excellency, to flag off this year’s celebration,” he declared to enthusiastic applause.
