Tension is mounting over the ongoing reconstruction of the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, as concerns have been raised regarding alleged political interference in the project.
A call has gone out to Governor Hyacinth Alia to intervene and investigate the conduct of the Benue State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Hon. Terkimbir Kyange, who is accused of orchestrating a plot to terminate the contract of the current project contractor, Mr. Monimichelle.
Indigenes of the state, particularly from Vandeikya Local Government Area — the same locality as the Governor — have expressed deep concerns over what they describe as a campaign of sabotage against the contractor, allegedly being carried out in collaboration with members of the Benue State House of Assembly.
Observers say the Commissioner’s actions run contrary to the development-focused vision of Governor Alia’s administration. There are claims that Kyange is acting out of personal interest, driven by greed and political rivalry, rather than in the best interests of the people of Benue State.
Stakeholders are calling on the Governor to immediately constitute a discreet and impartial committee to investigate the matter, ensure transparency, and protect the integrity of the project, which remains a vital sporting and economic asset for the state.
The future of the Aper Aku Stadium — and the trust of the people — may well hinge on the administration’s response to these serious allegations.
