NIGERIA PLAYERS’ UNION EDUCATE CLUBS CAPTAINS ON LEADERSHIP ROLE

As part of the players union activities to close the knowledge gap of Professional Footballers and promote leadership qualities amongst her members, the national association of Nigeria Professional Footballers NANPF, under its Footballers Education Services Initiative ( FESI) School Club Captains on leadership role

The Club Captain in a football club holds a significant leadership position and is responsible for a variety of duties that contribute to the team’s performance, cohesion, and overall spirit. The major responsibilities typically include:

1. LEADERSHIP ON THE FIELD

The Club Captain serves as the primary leader during matches, guiding the team and making tactical decisions in coordination with the coach. They motivate teammates and help maintain focus and discipline.

2 COMMUNICATION

Effectively communicating between the players and coaching staff is crucial. The Club Captain often relays information, feedback, and strategies from the coaches to the players and vice versa.

3 TEAM MORAL

The captain plays a vital role in fostering team spirit and morale. They encourage teammates, celebrate successes, and help lift spirits during challenging
times.

4 REPRESENTATIONS

The captain represents the club in official functions, community engagements, and media interactions, embodying the club’s values and ethos.

5.ROLE MODEL

By demonstrating professionalism, dedication, and a strong work ethic, the captain sets a standard for other players to follow both on and off the pitch.

6 CONFLICT RESOLUTION

The captain often serves as a mediator among players, helping to resolve disputes and maintain harmony within the squad.

7 PERFORMANCE REVIEW

The Club Captain may provide input on individual and team performances, contributing to discussions about training methods and player development.

8 FITNESS AND CONDUCT

Ensuring that teammates are adhering to fitness regimens and maintaining discipline both during training and in the community is also a key responsibility.

9 MENTORSHIP

Experienced captains often take on a mentoring role for younger players, providing guidance, support, and advice to help them develop their skills.

10.LEAD BY EXAMPLE

On the pitch, the captain is expected to lead by example in terms of effort, skill, tact, and sportsmanship, inspiring teammates to perform at their best
