The Diaspora Chapter of the Labour Party has endorsed the decision by the party leadership to distribute free nomination forms to youths, women, and other underrepresented groups ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a press conference on May 18, 2026, the National Chairman of the party, Julius Abure, said the initiative was aimed at removing financial barriers that often prevent qualified Nigerians from contesting elective positions.
Abure explained that the move forms part of the party’s broader efforts to deepen internal democracy and encourage wider political participation across the country.
According to him, the Labour Party is determined to shift the nation’s political culture away from money politics by creating opportunities for competent Nigerians, especially youths and women, to emerge as leaders.
“This initiative is a pivotal step towards lifting the burden of monetisation in our political landscape. We believe every Nigerian, regardless of financial background, deserves the opportunity to lead and effect change,” he said.
Under the arrangement, nomination forms for various elective offices will be made available free of charge through the party’s official platforms, while completed forms are expected to be submitted to state chairpersons.
The party also announced that its governorship and State House of Assembly primaries will hold on May 27, 2026, while the House of Representatives and Senate primaries are scheduled for May 29. A consensus process to select the party’s presidential candidate is also expected to take place in Abuja on the same day.
Reacting to the development, Chairman of the Diaspora Labour Party Chapter and Director General of the Directorate of International and Diaspora Affairs (DIDA), Eddie Oparaoji, described the initiative as a major step towards inclusiveness and social justice.
Oparaoji said the policy would give hope to Nigerians who had long been excluded from the political process due to financial constraints.
He added that the Diaspora Chapter fully supports the initiative and believes it will help strengthen democratic participation ahead of the 2027 elections.
He urged eligible Nigerians to take advantage of the opportunity to contribute to nation-building through active political participation.
