Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested a suspected armed robber and recovered firearms and other stolen items in Owerri, as part of ongoing efforts to curb violent crime in the state.
The suspect, identified as Chigaemezu Aguguom, a native of Umuneke in Isiala Mbano Local Government Area, was apprehended on April 2, 2026, at about 6:00 a.m. by a patrol team from the Orji Division in collaboration with the Anti-Narcotics Unit.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the operation was carried out based on credible intelligence.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Orji Division, CSP Kennedy Oti, led the team that arrested the suspect at the Bishop’s Court axis near Pacific Hotel, Owerri.
Police disclosed that the suspect was found with gunshot wounds allegedly sustained during a failed criminal operation.
During interrogation, Aguguom reportedly confessed to being a member of a five-man armed robbery gang and provided information currently aiding the police in their efforts to apprehend other fleeing members of the syndicate.
Items recovered from him include two locally fabricated firearms with five live cartridges, four smartphones, a wristwatch, and other valuables suspected to have been stolen.
The police said the suspect and the exhibits have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Owerri, for further investigation and possible prosecution.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, CP Audu Garba Bosso, has assured residents of adequate security during the Easter period. He urged members of the public to support the police by reporting suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through designated emergency lines.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining operations aimed at tackling criminal activities across the state.
