The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), through its Referee Development Unit, suspended officials Ignatius Nwanekwu and Chinoso Ezeh over alleged poor officiating. However, newly-surfaced video footage and multiple eyewitness accounts challenge the validity of these claims, calling into question the fairness of the disciplinary action.

Stakeholders and fans are now urging the NFF to launch a transparent review of the incident. They have called for the deployment of independent observers and accredited media personnel to oversee upcoming fixtures at the Akwa Centre, to ensure accountability and impartial officiating.
Many have expressed concern that the suspension could intimidate referees who resist external pressures, particularly from powerful figures allegedly attempting to influence match outcomes in favor of specific teams.
Allegations of Undue Influence
Critics argue that the move by the federation sets a dangerous precedent—one that could compromise referee independence and open the door to manipulation and coercion within the league.
“The integrity of our football is at stake,” one supporter said. “We need to protect officials who stand by the rules and not punish them unjustly.”
