Easter Monday celebrations in Mbaise have taken on a scholarly and cultural tone today, as Chief Louis M. Alozie, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), chairs the official launch of the groundbreaking Igbo literary work titled “Ilulu Na Akpaalaokwu Igbo.”
This 32-page book, authored and compiled by the Greater Mbaise Development Forum, represents a major educational initiative aimed at preserving and promoting the Igbo language and culture across the globe.
Published under the leadership of Prof. Polycarp Umunnakwe Nwaoha, the book addresses a longstanding gap in the documentation of Ilulu—a rich form of oral and linguistic expression rooted deeply in Igbo tradition. The idea for the project was sparked by Chief Remi Onuoha, a diaspora-based cultural enthusiast who, two years ago, instituted a trophy for Ilulu Igbo competitions. His vision inspired the Forum to create a documented reference for future generations.
The book was officially presented to the Forum in December 2024 by the project head and Chairman of the Cultural Committee, Sir Desmond Obani. Since then, it has gained recognition and circulation among Igbo communities both locally and internationally.
To complement the launch, the Greater Mbaise Development Forum also organized a secondary school competition in Ilulu Igbo across the three local government areas of Mbaise. This move is aimed at fostering cultural pride and linguistic excellence among the youth.
The high-profile event today features the presence of distinguished personalities. His Royal Highness, Eze Leo Nwokocha, Chairman of the Mbaise Council of Traditional Rulers, serves as the Royal Father of the Day, adding traditional gravitas to the cultural celebration.
Her Majesty, Queen Dr. Shirley Ngozi Okwudimma, graces the occasion as the Mother of the Day.
The Launch Planning Committee is chaired by Barrister Sir R. A. Onyeulor (PhD), while the role of Chief Launcher is held by Chief Barr. Success Obioma Akagburuonye, popularly known as Akaraugo Mbaise.
Notable co-launchers include High Chief Emeka Njoku, Barr. Emma Njoku, Chief Peter Chika Dede, Chief Ethel Ufomba (Agujiegbe), Hon. Architect Chuks Ikwu, among others.
Today’s launch marks a significant milestone in the cultural and educational advocacy of the Mbaise people as they continue to take bold steps in preserving and promoting the rich heritage of the Igbo nation.
