The executive secretary of the Nigeria players union Nigeria ex international, comrade Austin Omerechuly Popo says the players union is desirous to seek real status for Nigeria Professional Football players more than ever before. According to the Players’ Union scribe, the 2024 Players Congress holding in Akure on the 10th of August 2024 will amongst other objectives seek to secure real status for Nigeria Professional Football players. The players constitute and represent a major force in the football ecosystem . This is the first players congress under the new governance structure of the players union largely composed and led by the current players represented by their Captains.
The Congress will priorities its conversation around issues that will promote and determine the true status of Professional players in Nigeria which shall includes employment contract, national dispute resolution chambers, social protection, insurance, career opportunities, retirement plans etc. He said further that ” the Congress shall produce models and plans that will enable the players link up and network with their colleagues plying their trade abroad who have had the good fortune of being defended by strong unions, and owe it to themselves to help the players back home and contribute to the development of their social status through their support to the union
” the Congress will talk about everything which can help Professional Footballers to florish, everything that can provide them with the means to have their rights respected, everything that allows them to defend their interests.
It is therefore incumbent on all of the clubs captains who are accredited delegates to make it to the Congress We have our future in our hands, but we will only succeed in imposing our views and assert our rights if we are united. Standing united will together be the masters of our own destiny.
