Government Secondary School, Owerri has kick started the Ex Iwuanyawu Nationale Imo State Secondary Schools Football Competition on a bright note by defeating City School Owerri 2-0 at the Dan Anyiam Stadium Owerri.
The competition, which is the brain child of the former players of Iwuanyawu Nationale is part of the program lined up by the retired players to give back to the society.
The retired players are led by Mr Isaac Mbika in collaboration with the Ministry of Education in Imo State and will be played in the five sports zone of the state.
The opening ceremony was witnessed by the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Johncliff Nwadike, Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Hon Ogbonna Onyeocha, Chairman, Imo State Sports Commission, Hon.Eliezar Ogbonna, Director Imo State Sports Commission, Sir Fedinand Emeaha and sports and political personalities in the state.
Speaking at the unveiling of the competition, the Commissioner for Education said the revival of sports in the state has begun with the landmark collaboration between sports and education in the state.
He said that the ministry will ensure that the competition relish it goals in the state and thank the state Governor, Hope Uzodimma for the opportunity given to the young ones in the state to showcase their skills.
The Commissioner for Sports and Chairman, Sports Commission said they will work hand in glove with the Ex Iwuanyawu Nationale players association to achieve the goal of taking sports back to the grassroots.
The competition will see Comprehensive Secondary school Amakohia take on Holy Ghost Secondary School Owerri on the 31th at Holy Ghost Secondary School ground from where it will move to the other sports zones in the state.
