A retired Assistant Commissioner of Police, ACP Felix Kigigha has demanded an awareness and sensitization programme for fans and supporters of teams in the local league to end violence, Wakawaka Sports Extra reports.
The referee and match assessor equally called on the security agencies to beef up security at match venues by delegating competent hands to avert any danger.
His words: “We are not doing much to stop it by way of education. This issue of fans behaviours over referees and match officials in general have not been impressive in a country such as ours, a football playing nation.
“We have to make them understand that these things destroy our football from growing and gives us a bad name. The issue of security is with us and the security agencies are not doing enough.
“I’m in the league and know what happens. If security does well, I will commend them and I’m mentioning the facts from isolated venues where the did well in Lagos in the game between Sporting Lagos and Gombe United.
“Security should be given to the referees even the teams, it is specified so that at every given point, you have enough manpower. But a situation where you go to a match venue and see all women. You can’t compare men to women. It should stop and it is our own duty. They are capable of doing it. I’m calling on police authorities to sit up and all these issues will be reduced to the bearest minimum.”
