…as Vasco Dagama Ex-players pays condolence visit
Former Director General, National Sports Commission and Deputy Chief Of Staff, Imo State Government, Dr Patrick Ekeji has described his movement to Vasco Dagama Football Club of Enugu after his secondary education as the best thing that happened to his life as a sportsman.
Recall that the young Ekeji against all expectation joined Vasco who were regarded as rivals to Rangers International, a club that is followed mostly by igbos across the world because of the civil war in the country.
The Umuemeri Ogwu Nguru Nwenkwo-born sports guru made this known when members of Vasco Dagama FC Ex Players Association paid him a condolence visit to commiserate with him over his mother’s death and burial last December.
He said after winning the academician game in 1972, everyone including Rangers officials all relaxed thinking that he will join the club like every big player from the region were doing at that time but something very important happened.
“When Mr Amaechi Otuji of Vasco Dagama travelled down to Holy Ghost College Owerri and gave me a blueprint of what he thinks will be best for me, he said if you go to Rangers, they have lots of stars they will keep you at the reserve bench but if you come to Vasco we will make you a superstar and you will have the opportunity of going to university with the assurance of regular football and education which was one of the best thing I loved.
“I joined the club and everyone was surprised I came to the league game where I stopped Rangers from winning the game that ended by 2-1 in favour of Vasco Dagama and the second leg ended in a draw.

“The fans hated me for spoiling their day the fans became suprise to see me Christian Chukwu, Okala and others having a good time out after the game which made them to ask themselves questions and made everyone believe football is not war.”
Ekeji promised to assist the group stand on a solid background by attracting other former players of the team to join hands in their programme of sustaining the name of the club.
Wakawaka Sports Extra reports that the delegation led by Mr Benjamin Agu thanked and decorated the wife Chief Barrister Ngozi Pat Ekeji as Mama Vasco Dagama for her support to the husband, who is among the best sports administrators in the world and few Nigerians with the Africa Sports Commission Medal of Excellence in Sports Administration in the continent.
