Member of Edo state Basketball Association and member Protocol and Ceremonial Committee of the Nigeria Basketball Federation Victor Umoru has appealed to the minister of sports Sunday Dare to allow the process of elective congress of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) run by announcing a new date for the election.
Mr Umoru made the appeal in Benin while interacting with the ObserverSports, saying that the minister and other concerned authorities should consider his expenses and resources already committed into the preparation for the election before the unexpected postponement.
The NBBF elections were scheduled to hold in Benin City, the Edo state capital, on October 30th,2021 but the election was postponed indefinitely by the federal ministry of sports.
Umoru emphasised that the NBBF is not in any crisis and wondered why the Sports Ministry distorted the process of the election which was in line with the constitution and resolutions of their extraordinary congress which had all stakeholders including the representatives of the Federal Ministry of Sports in attendance.
According to Mr Umoru, members in attendance at the extraordinary congress which held on Saturday, October 9, 2021 at Hotel de Bently, Abuja, voted to arrive at the choice of Benin City as host city and October 30 date for the NBBF election and that the permanent Secretary,Federation Ministry of sports who announced the postponement represented the minister at the extraordinary Congress where all the decisions regarding the NBBF election was taken.
He appealed to the minister and other concerned authorities to consider the interest and growth of the NBBF and sports ahead of individual persons interest, maintaining that no single individual is bigger than the NBBF.
Umoru however advised those attempting to cause problems for NBBF without genuine reasons to desist, insisting that election is the legitimate means to have leadership and that the process of the NBBF election be allowed to run.
He reassured the Federation and the minister of the readiness of Edo state to host them.
” This is the first time Edo is given the opportunity to host NBBF election and it is historic for us. We have duly informed the state government and have made provisions for everything required for a peaceful conduct of the election. We are waiting for the minister to give us a new date for the election. We have committed a lot of resources into it already. ” Umoru said.
He commended the NBBF caretaker chairman Engineer Musa Kida for respecting the decision of the minister.
Eng Musa Kida is seeking re-election as Nigeria Basketball Federation chairman and there is no known opponents challenging him.
