Heartland FC midfielder Francis Erikan has been named the Imo SWAN Heartland FC Player of the Month for February 2026 after an outstanding start to his second spell with the club.

The award, organized by the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, was decided through a poll conducted among members of the association, with Erikan emerging as the unanimous choice of voters.

The Akwa Ibom–born midfielder, who recently rejoined Heartland FC during the mid-season transfer window from Akwa United FC, made an immediate impact on his return to the Naze Millionaires with a string of impressive performances.

Erikan secured all votes cast in the poll, finishing ahead of fellow nominee Jonathan Osondu, another mid-season signing who joined the Owerri-based club from Crown FC.

The midfielder played a key role in Heartland’s only victory in February, a 2–1 win over Abia Comets FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, where he scored a goal and also provided an assist.

He was equally one of the standout performers in the team’s narrow defeat to Beyond Limits FA in Ikenne, a match that marked his second debut for the club.
Osondu also enjoyed a solid month, featuring in both games played by Heartland in February and getting on the scoresheet in the victory over Abia Comets, underlining the positive impact of the club’s mid-season reinforcements.

The Imo SWAN Heartland FC Player of the Month Award is an initiative of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Imo State Chapter, under the leadership of Cosmos Chukwuemeka.

The initiative was created to recognize outstanding performances by Heartland players while encouraging professionalism and excellence within the team.

Since its introduction last season, the award has continued to honour top performers and forms part of SWAN’s commitment to promoting football development in Imo State.

Erikan will receive the award on March 14 before kickoff of Heartland’s Nigeria National League fixture against Sunshine Stars FC at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.

Technical Manager of Heartland FC, Emmanuel Amuneke, has praised his team’s performance following their 3–1 victory over Smart City FC in the Nigeria National League.

Amuneke described the result as a positive step for the Naze Millionaires, noting that the players showed determination and tactical discipline to secure all three points.

According to the former international, the victory reflects the hard work the team has been putting in during training as they continue their push in the league campaign.

“We are happy with the result. The players showed commitment and executed the game plan well. Winning 3–1 against a side like Smart City is a good boost for the team,” Amuneke said.

The Heartland technical manager, however, stressed that the team will remain focused and continue working hard as the league progresses.

He added that the objective is to maintain consistency and build on the momentum from the victory as they aim for improved performances in their subsequent matches in the league.

The Owerri Girls’ Secondary School Owerri Alumnae Association (OGSSOAA) joined the global community in celebrating the 2026 International Women’s Day with a strong call for empowerment, justice and concrete action for women and girls.

The event, held under the theme “Rights, Justice, and Action for All Women and Girls,” brought together alumnae from across Nigeria and the diaspora to celebrate the achievements of women while addressing the challenges they continue to face in society.

A major highlight of the celebration was the presence of the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, who served as the Special Guest of Honour and a proud member of the association.

In her address, Ekomaru highlighted the critical contributions of women to societal development and emphasized the need to continue advancing gender equality. She acknowledged the challenges women face, including balancing career and family life, abusive relationships and financial dependency.

The deputy governor commended the Governor of Imo State, Senator Hope Uzodimma, for promoting women’s participation in governance and providing opportunities for women in his administration. She also praised the First Lady of the state, Barr. Chioma Hope Uzodimma, for her continued encouragement and support for women and girls.

Ekomaru urged women to push boundaries, break barriers and remain steadfast in their values while striving to create a more inclusive and thriving society.

Also present at the event was the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare in Imo State, Hon. Nkechinyere Ugwu, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to policies that support the welfare and advancement of women and girls.

Two distinguished keynote speakers, Noble Lady Professor Viola Onwuliri, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Education, and Senator Betty Apiafi, also delivered thought-provoking presentations.

Professor Onwuliri emphasized the importance of justice and decisive action in addressing gender inequality.

Drawing from her experiences in public service, she stressed the need for mentorship, educational support and the creation of safe environments that enable women and girls to thrive.

She encouraged women to confront discrimination, pursue excellence with discipline and integrity, and use their leadership positions to uplift others.

Senator Apiafi, in her remarks, highlighted the need to recognize and protect women’s rights while addressing laws and cultural practices that hinder progress.

She commended the alumnae for their commitment to investing in their alma mater and nurturing future generations.

She also stressed the importance of mentorship, collaboration and self-care, urging women to support one another and embrace the philosophy of “giving to gain” for broader societal impact.

During the programme, some alumnae shared inspiring messages of resilience and determination.

Dr. Pearl Onukwugha encouraged women to take charge and drive change by deploying inner strength, getting involved in organizations and cultivating resilience.

She noted that change begins with mindset and urged women to create awareness, educate young girls on their rights and train boys to become responsible men.

A member of the Canada branch, Mrs. Chinyere, also shared empowering insights, urging women to discover what works for them, understand their environment, avoid toxic spaces and take charge of their lives.

Some alumnae leaders also shared messages on overcoming obstacles.

Olive Ngozi-Amuzuo, President of the Owerri (Home) Branch, said overcoming obstacles builds strength, wisdom and confidence, turning challenges into stepping stones toward success.

Vicky Nwanebu, President of the Port Harcourt Branch, emphasized that success is attainable when women maintain the right mindset and take goal-driven actions.

Ogechi Assumpta Obinna, President of the Enugu (042) Chapter, noted that true strength lies in using shared resilience to dismantle barriers and uplift other women.

Dr. Ogechi Okafor, President of the Abuja Branch, said with a positive mindset, perseverance and resilience, women can overcome every obstacle.

Lady Lynda Chuma-Osuebi (née Akagha), Acting President of the Lagos Branch, encouraged women to keep moving forward and never give up.

Mrs. Digna Ibeh, President of the United Kingdom Branch, urged women to remain strong, encouraged and steadfast in faith.

Mrs. Chinwe Affam, President of the Canada Branch, advised women to remain determined and continue pushing forward with resilience and purpose.

Pastor Lilian Ajah, President of the Jos Branch, encouraged women to embrace obstacles as experiences and tackle them with positivity while remaining focused on their goals.

The celebration also showcased unity among OGSS branches worldwide, with members from Home (Owerri), Port Harcourt, Umuahia, Enugu, Jos, Lagos, Abuja, Canada, the United Kingdom and the USA sharing colourful group photographs symbolizing dignity, ambition, hope and solidarity.

George-Anokwuru, said the gathering reaffirmed the alumnae’s collective commitment to inspiring and empowering women across generations.

Captain of the Imo State female handball team, Chidera Osinachi, has attributed the team’s success at the just-concluded Niger Delta Games to the motivation and support received from the state’s Commissioner for Sports, Obinna Onyeocha.

Osinachi said the encouragement from Onyeocha and other officials boosted the morale of the players and helped them remain focused throughout the competition, eventually propelling the team to victory over their opponents.

The captain noted that the commissioner’s confidence in the team before the competition served as a major source of inspiration for the players to give their best and make Imo State proud.

She also commended the sponsors and organisers of the games, particularly the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and Dunamis Icon, for successfully hosting the tournament and providing the athletes with the needed facilities and welfare.
According to her, the organisers ensured that the teams were well catered for during the competition.

“Everything they provided, they did their best — the facilities, the food, the equipment — they provided everything that we needed. I would like to thank them,” Osinachi said.

She further appreciated journalists and sports icons who supported and promoted the tournament, noting that their efforts helped project the talents discovered at the games.

Sports stakeholders in Imo State have called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to declare a state of emergency in sporting facilities following Team Imo’s disappointing performance at the recently concluded Niger Delta Games.

Team Imo returned home with only five gold medals, raising concerns about the state’s athletics infrastructure.

Experts and former coaches blame the decline on the prolonged absence of a functional tartan track at the Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, a facility whose track has been removed for several years.

Retired athletics coach Joe Chimezie , a former official of the Imo State Sports Commission, said athletes cannot compete effectively without proper facilities.

“Running on concrete and racing on tartan tracks are completely different. The state risks losing its athletics legacy if urgent action is not taken,” he said.

Documenting events at the competition, state liaison committee member Kennedy Onwunali noted that Imo athletes showed determination but struggled against competitors who train consistently on standard tartan surfaces.

During the games in Benin City, Edo State, the athletes reportedly had to familiarise themselves with the track and practise using spikes only hours before their events.

Imo State has historically produced world-class athletes, including Chioma Ajunwa, who won long jump gold at the 1996 Summer Olympics; Charity Opara, a silver medalist in the 4×400m relay at the same Games; and Christy Opara‑Thompson, who claimed bronze in the 4×100m relay at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Other notable athletes from the state include Obinna Eregbu, Chidi Imoh.

Stakeholders argue that declaring a state of emergency would fast-track the construction and rehabilitation of modern sports facilities, including a tartan track, enabling athletes to train properly and restoring Imo’s once-dominant presence in sprinting, jumping, and throwing events at national and international competitions.

“The time to act is now,” Coach Chimezi added. “Without immediate intervention, Imo risks being left behind in every major competition.”

Observers also noted that track and field alone accounts for more than 60 medal events across male and female categories, meaning that with adequate preparation and facilities, Imo State could significantly improve its medal prospects in future competitions.

The Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, on Thursday continued the Commission’s nationwide appreciation tour with a visit to Abeokuta, where outstanding junior athlete Majekodunmi Afusat Bisola was presented with a cheque of ₦3 million.

The presentation forms part of the NSC’s initiative to recognise and reward exceptional junior athletes who distinguished themselves in 2025 and contributed significantly to Nigeria’s medal haul.

Majekodunmi delivered an impressive run of performances on the track. At the 2024 National Sports Festival, she stormed to gold in the 400 metres and the 4x400m relay. She replicated the double triumph at the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Junior Championship in Abeokuta, before emerging as one of the standout stars at the African Youth Games in Luanda, Angola.

Speaking during the presentation, Hon Olopade explained that the Commission deemed it necessary to extend financial appreciation to grassroots athletes after elite performers had earlier received grants running into thousands of dollars.
“A few weeks ago, after paying grants to our elite athletes, we agreed there was a need to also appreciate these young, budding talents who made Nigeria proud last year,” he said.

He disclosed that of the 376 medals recorded by Nigerian athletes in 2025, more than 200 were won by grassroots talents, underscoring the importance of sustained investment in youth development.

The NSC further noted that the decision to present the awards at athletes’ schools and training grounds was deliberate. According to the Commission, the approach is aimed at promoting transparency, tackling age cheating, and demonstrating clearly how talents are being discovered and nurtured directly from the school system.

Reacting to the honour, Majekodunmi expressed deep appreciation to the National Sports Commission, assuring that she remains determined to achieve even greater feats for Nigeria.
She stated that the reward would further motivate her as she sets her sights on a podium finish at the forthcoming Summer Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal.

The appreciation tour had earlier commenced on Wednesday with a visit to Grange School, Lagos, where teenage swimmers Aidan Dumuije-Abili and Tofunmi Ibidapo were also rewarded for their outstanding performances.

The tour will continue in the coming days, with the Chairman, Malam Shehu Dikko and the DG also scheduled to visit Delta State, Akwa Ibom State, and Abuja as the Commission sustains its drive to celebrate and invest in Nigeria’s emerging sporting talents.

Heartland FC leading scorer Joel Okoro has expressed strong confidence ahead of the club’s crucial encounter with Smart City FC in the Nigeria National League this weekend.

Okoro, who has been one of the standout performers for the Heartland FC this season, believes the team is fully prepared for the challenge and determined to secure maximum points from the encounter.

On March 5th, 2026, the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association Nigeria (USGEAAN) Enugu State Chapter, in collaboration with Enugu Window On America, hosted the 2nd edition of the Mentorship Series Through Life Stories.

The event featured Coach Kingsley Obiekwu MON, a member of the victorious Super Eagles Atlanta ’96 gold medalist team.

Coach Obiekwu shared his inspiring life story, highlighting his upbringing, choices, struggles, and triumphs. He emphasized the importance of self-understanding, discipline, dedication, and critical thinking in overcoming challenges and achieving excellence.
