The Imo State Commissioner for Sports, Hon. Obinna Onyeocha, on Saturday took the opening tee shot to flag off the Cancer Awareness Golf Kitty at the Arsenal Golf Club, Obinze.

 

Addressing players and guests before play commenced, Onyeocha likened the fight against cancer to a game of golf, stressing the need for teamwork, discipline, and preparation to stay ahead. He described awareness as the game plan, screening as the defense, and healthy habits as the steady swing needed to stay on course.

 

He further noted that early detection remains the best shot at victory, while community support is crucial for those already battling the disease.

 

The kitty, hosted by Dr. Okey Duru, drew a strong field of participants and spectators. Among those on the course were HRM Igwe Acholonu, SAN Dewigwe, and several other dignitaries, who joined golfers, health advocates, and community leaders in driving home the message of awareness.

 

The event combined the camaraderie of the fairway with advocacy for healthier living, sending a clear signal that, just like in golf, focus, consistency, and support are key to beating cancer.

Rangers Foundation Hails Amaraizu on USGEAAN Election

Rangers International FC Foundation has congratulated its pioneer chairman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, on his election as the pioneer State Coordinator of the United States Government Exchange Alumni Association of Nigeria (USGEAAN), Enugu State chapter.

 

USGEAAN is a dynamic network of Nigerians who have participated in United States government–sponsored exchange programs. Its mission is to strengthen alumni connections, enhance professional growth, and drive sustainable development across the country.

 

In a statement issued by the foundation, Amaraizu’s victory was described as a “well-deserved honour” that reflects his dedication to community development, human capital advancement, and sports growth.

Ichida Sports Committee Unveils Ichie Ofia Memorial Tennis Tournament

The Ichida Sports Committee has announced the maiden edition of the Ichie Ofia Memorial Tennis Tournament, a competition designed to celebrate sporting excellence while honoring the late Ichie Ofia.

The tournament will serve off on December 26, 2025, at the Tennis Court of Ezeokpu Civic Centre, Ichida, Anaocha LGA, Anambra State. According to the organizers, the semi-final matches will be played on January 2, 2026, while the grand finale will take place on January 3, 2026.

The championship, strictly for participants aged 40 years and above, promises to be highly competitive with mouthwatering prizes on offer. The winner will walk away with ₦1 million, while the runner-up will pocket ₦500,000. Semi-finalists will receive ₦250,000 each, alongside other consolation prizes for remaining participants.

The organizers also noted that the competition is exclusive to Anambra State indigenes, while former professional players are barred from registering.

Registration for the tournament, which comes with a ₦10,000 entry fee, is currently open and will close on November 30, 2025.

Speaking ahead of the event, the committee urged interested players to register early, emphasizing that the tournament will not only promote fitness and recreation but also strengthen community ties in Ichida and beyond.

FMMP Appoints HRM Eze Chidume Okoro as Patron

The Federation of Mbaise Media Professionals (FMMP) has appointed His Royal Majesty, Eze Chidume Okoro of Rehaboth Palace, Amano Obohia, as its Patron.

 

The investiture, held at the monarch’s palace, drew prominent media professionals from Mbaise, community leaders and stakeholders, who came together to honor the respected royal father in a ceremony marked by cultural pride and solidarity.

 

Eze Okoro, a seasoned traditional ruler and successful businessman, has served in several leadership positions including Deputy Chairman of the Imo State Council of Traditional Rulers, Chairman of Owerri Zone Council of Traditional Rulers, and two-time Chairman of the Mbaise Council of Traditional Rulers. Beyond the throne, he is an international entrepreneur and employer of over 200 workers.

 

During the ceremony, speakers commended his leadership, hospitality and commitment to Mbaise’s development. FMMP President, Comrade Patrick Chinenye Mgbaja, described him as “a responsible Eze whose fatherly advice will guide the federation.” Pioneer President, Chief Pastor Christian Nwokocha, called for stronger ties between Mbaise and its neighbors, while Ori Martins urged the monarch to champion road infrastructure and development projects. Chief Sir Batty Kalakia emphasized the power of the media in uniting Mbaise leadership and pledged FMMP’s readiness to work with the royal father.

 

In his response, HRM Eze Chidume Okoro expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting the central role of journalists in society.

 

I am deeply happy that the crème de la crème of Mbaise journalists came to pay me homage. Journalists are vital—anybody ignoring them does so at their own risk. I humbly accept to be your patron and will support you in every possible way,” he said.

Alaribe Names Coordinator for Rural Development, Empowerment in Aboh Mbaise

The Executive Chairman of Aboh Mbaise Local Government Area, Barr. Iheukwumere Alaribe, has appointed Comrade Frank Obi Uche as Coordinator for Rural Development and Economic Empowerment.

 

The appointment, announced at the council headquarters, mandates Uche to oversee empowerment programmes directed to the local government from state and federal governments, as well as monitor development projects within Aboh Mbaise on behalf of the Imo State Government.

 

Alaribe said the new role was created to ensure the council receives its fair share of resources and benefits. He expressed confidence in Uche’s ability to deliver, assuring him of the council’s cooperation.

 

In his remarks, Uche pledged to discharge his duties with transparency and accountability, promising to work towards maximising opportunities for the people of Aboh Mbaise.

Nwagwu Health Initiative Extends Free Eye Care to Surgery Beneficiaries

The Nwagwu Health Initiative has announced a special round of free medical check-ups for beneficiaries of its August 2025 eye surgeries in Aboh Mbaise, Imo State.

 

The follow-up exercise is scheduled to begin on September 12, 2025, at Trans Amadi Holiday Resort Limited, Obetiti Autonomous Community, Aboh Mbaise LGA, from 7:00 a.m. daily.

 

In a statement, Anselm Onyeananam, coordinator of the AVM Uche Nwagwu Medical Outreach, explained that the checks are targeted exclusively at those who underwent surgeries during last month’s outreach.

 

“These medical check-ups are absolutely free,” he said, encouraging all beneficiaries to turn up for the follow-up care.

 

The Nwagwu Health Initiative, founded by Air Vice Marshal Uche Nwagwu has in recent years become a beacon of community healthcare support in rural areas, offering free medical services to thousands who cannot afford regular hospital care.

Court Grants Bail to First Citizen Publisher

A Magistrate Court sitting in Owerri, Imo State, on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, granted bail in the sum of N2 million to the Publisher of First Citizen Newspaper, Ejike Ogbonna.

Other bail conditions include providing a surety who must show proof of ownership of a landed property within the court’s jurisdiction and a traditional ruler to endorse the bail bond.

Presiding Magistrate C.J. Uzoechi, who granted the bail application, noted that the matter is bailable.

The matter was adjourned to October 3, 2025, for hearing.

Ejike Ogbonna, who was brought to court in handcuffs, is standing trial on a four-count charge bordering on alleged cyberbullying.

He is accused of defaming the Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Compliance, Chinasa Nwaneri, through a voice note allegedly circulated via social media.

It was gathered that Ogbonna spent about a month in the Owerri Correctional Centre before his release on bail.

ENIC Tennis League Holds AGM September 27 in Owerri

The East of the Niger Inter Club (ENIC) Tennis League will hold its 2024/2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday, September 27, 2025, at the Safan Recreation Club, Owerri, with proceedings expected to begin at 12 noon prompt.

 

In a notice signed by the General Secretary, Macaulay Udom, and made available to clubs, the agenda will include the reading and adoption of the 2023/2024 AGM minutes, matters arising, the Chairman’s address on league activities, financial reports, and general reactions from members.

 

A key highlight of the meeting will be elections into vacant executive positions. Offices to be contested include Deputy Chairman, Chief Referee, Treasurer, Publicity Secretary, Assistant General Secretary, and Legal Adviser. Interested candidates have been directed to pay a nomination fee of ₦10,000 into the league’s Ecobank account and submit endorsed forms through their club presidents or general secretaries.

 

The notice further reminded all participating clubs that they are expected to sponsor two delegates each to the meeting to ensure effective representation.

 

The ENIC Tennis League, headquartered at Aba Sports Club, has over the years become a strong platform for nurturing grassroots tennis talents and promoting inter-club competition across the region.
