The National Coordinator of the Renewed Hope Gender Initiative, Comrade Martins Chibuzor Opara, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for fulfilling his promises to Nigeria’s victorious women’s basketball team, D’Tigress.
Opara described the President’s gesture as a major boost to sports development and a strong indication that outstanding Nigerian athletes can now expect meaningful recognition and support after achieving success on the international stage.
The D’Tigress players received financial rewards, three-bedroom flats and national honours following their impressive performance at the AfroBasket championship.
According to Opara, the decision to combine financial incentives with housing support and national recognition goes beyond celebrating the players’ achievement, stressing that it could encourage more young Nigerians to pursue their sporting dreams.
He said the recognition of D’Tigress demonstrates the importance of investing in athletes and appreciating the sacrifices they make while representing the country.
Opara further commended the players for their dedication, discipline and resilience, describing them as worthy ambassadors of Nigeria.
He expressed optimism that the President’s action would motivate other Nigerian athletes to continue working hard to achieve success at continental and global competitions.
He said the reward for D’Tigress should also serve as a message to young girls across the country that their talents and contributions to national development can be recognised and rewarded.
Opara urged the Federal Government to sustain the momentum by developing more programmes that would support athletes, particularly women and young people at the grassroots level.
