Members of Standard Tennis Club Owerri are preparing for a major leadership transition as the club holds its presidential election on May 31, 2026, at the club’s clubhouse in Owerri.
The election is expected to usher in a new president and executive committee that will pilot the affairs of one of the foremost tennis clubs in the South-East and across Nigeria.
Information made available to ENIC Media indicates that prominent members of the club, including Sunny Nganya, Laz. Okoroha and Ugochukwu Nwaogwugwu, are contesting for the position of Club President.
Other contestants cleared for various executive positions include Emeka G. Eche for Financial Secretary, Ebuka Ezenweke and Ikenna Nwaneri for Club Captain, Oluchi Ozurumba for Vice Captain, and Johnson Chimezie for Treasurer.
Also cleared for the election are Okechukwu Okpei for Assistant General Secretary, Uzoma Onuachu for General Secretary, as well as Victor Iwuanyanwu and Ugochukwu Ejike for Vice President.
The club’s electoral committee also announced that some positions remain vacant, including PRO/Social Secretary, Kitchen/Bar Secretary and Provost.
Members of the club have continued to express enthusiasm ahead of the polls, with many describing the forthcoming election as crucial to the continued growth and development of tennis within the club and the wider region.
Regarded as one of the biggest tennis clubs east of the River Niger, Standard Tennis Club Owerri has remained a notable hub for recreational and competitive tennis in Nigeria, producing active players and contributing to the promotion of the sport over the years.
Observers believe the outcome of the election will shape the future direction of the club, particularly in the areas of sports development, membership growth and grassroots tennis promotion.
